Celebrating With The Red, White, Blue and a Pandowdy

 This week, I brought the red, white and blue outdoors using our potting bench. It can also used for casual outdoor entertaining (with a few dirt stains that easily get covered up with a cloth). I still remember the day that Mr. Mountain Breaths surprised me with it, and I use it all the time.

Here's my Pottery Barn knockoff pillow that I showed in a previous post. Inspired by the American Flag print pillow cover (photo below) seen in the PB catalog. Their pillow is 24" and made with linen/cotton. 

I already had the fabric that I got at Walmart about five years ago, and used existing pillows. All I had to do was measure, cut and pinned the fabric closed on the backside. No sewing required. I "wrapped" the pillow with the fabric like you would wrap a birthday gift, and used safety pins on the middle fold and the two end folds. I will remove the flag fabric after the July Fourth holiday. I love the patriotic touch in the backyard.

 

I used plastic star plates from Michael's (last year) that are a perfect size for appetizers and dessert.

If you remember this succulent turtle from my Mother's Day post two years ago, he gets dressed up for the holidays too ;o)

We have company coming on Friday, so I played around with a centerpiece for the table. Kathleen is the centerpiece queen and uses flowers from her garden, so I used white peonies and mock orange blossoms. I put them in a red bowl, and elevated it on a red candle holder. I hope no one knocks it over ;o) I'll remove it before we eat just in case.

The table is set with rattan chargers, placemats, and Vietri dishes. I love the blue goblets from the Dollar Store. The "runner" is a linen towel from Wegmans.

I made an Apple Rhubarb Pandowdy from the Rustic Fruit Desserts cookbook. So what is a pandowdy? Basically, we’re talking about a pie without the bottom crust.



Last year, I made these refreshing Berry White Ice Pops. It has been so hot and humid here, that I will be making these again soon.
