Easy Street

I let this mystery which my friend Sherry said I should name "Mexican Salsa" for quite a few months and then decided I wanted borders.  The borders took quite a while to put on.  Then deciding how to quilt it became a big decision.  I wanted to try the laser light on my brother sewing machine, so straight line quilting won out. I have tried straight line quilting before, and I have to say that I am in love with the laser light!  I did get the entire thing done and put on the bed before the 2013 mystery named Celtic Solstice started!! Wahoo!!

I must admit that I don't really like the black and white background.  The teapots sure show up in the close up.  I guess if people are looking at if from the street it will be okay.
Well the mystery top has been sewn together  for a couple weeks.  I got it pressed and hung up so I could take a picture.  I don't know if or what I should do for borders.  Maybe I will let it age a bit.  Any suggestions would be welcome.

I have all the pieces and parts for the first 4 steps.  I have some trimming and cutting of the rabbit ears I had to stop and sew a few of the geese together in pairs.  I really enjoy looking at other people's progress.  Mine is ending up pretty busy for me. I see some others that I prefer and will remember for the future.  We're not done yet though.  :)  It may develop into something I like better. Step 4

Now I have moved the mystery quilt to its own page. I finally used the two rulers that Bonnie Hunter likes the companion angle and the easy angle.  I have used the companion angle before because it has some no slip circles on the back, but I don't know when or where.  I love the sensation of using up some of those smaller scraps. I became a little nervous when I read some of the posts about doing flying geese triangles this way.  A couple of people could not get the accuracy.  I have tried every method of making flying geese that anyone has devised over the years.  They all work and I even like all of them, but I can really see the advantages of doing them Bonnie's way.  It is amazing how accurate you can get when you practice something 128 times! Okay I only have 78 done and now step 3 is up.  Well I am going to try a few of the step 3 blocks and come back to my geese. I wish I had a few more black and white prints that are mainly white.  Going through this process is giving me lots of ideas for using my scraps and combining parts of these ideas.  A baby quilt with the center block using up some of those kid prints I have and then using the geese as star points.

  1. You've encouraged me to try the EasyAngle again for my flying geese. You're right I should be able to do it accuratly even after 64 times. I skipped step 3 and went right on to 4, I'll go back and try again.

  2. This is my first Mystery Quilt too. It is only my second machine pieced quilt, and rotary cut quilt for that matter, but I am really enjoying it.

  3. Glad to hear that you have gotten the hang of using Glad to hear that you have gotten the hang of using the companion angle and the easy angle rulers. I had been afraid of triangles before learning how to use them from Bonnie. I use the easy angle ruler every time I need HSTs!
