With Puff Vests It Is All About Selection and Styling

If you walk into any fashion retailer these days, odds are you are going to run straight into a mannequin in a puffy vest. This layering option emerges each fall in some variation or another so it is important to understand how to select and style these fall staples. First, in order to select a vest worthy of landing you on the best dressed list, then you must understand the challenges of the vest and how those challenges impact your shape. The biggest challenge in selecting a puffy vest is the actual fabric itself. The fabric lends itself to adding bulk to even the most petite frame, so it is important to look for a vest with details that will add shape. Look for vests that gather at the waist or have a belted detail that will create shape at the waistline. Avoid vests that do not button or zip as they will hang open and add volume to your frame. Once you have found a vest with all the appropriate details, then its time to select color. Fall is the time to make bold selections with color. There are fabulous jewel tones like silvers and golds available, or there are some great vibrant options like fuchsia or turquoise. As long as you style it well, any color would be appropriate so you can choose a color that will provide insight into your own personality. Next, comes the task of styling.

In the outfit featured above, I chose a charcoal grey version of the vest so that it would serve me over many seasons. Choosing a neutral option means that I can liven up my wardrobe each season by pairing the neutral vest with the must have color for that season and always remain in style. The vest itself will provide the volume for the outfit so it is important to choose a fitted top and a bottom to counteract that weight. In this case the top is a long sleeve fitted top with a swirl pattern and embellishment at the chest. By wearing the vest unzipped and tying the belt that is on the back I am able to create shape and highlight the tops best feature. The bottom I chose was a khaki cord, but you could have just  as easily have selected a dark skinny jean to finish off the look. I chose to wear minimal jewelry just a watch and a bracelet so I did not overpower the embellishment on the top. This is an outfit that I would wear shopping or on a casual lunch date with girl friends.

Just as with any other trend of the season, it is all about selection and styling, the puff vest is no different.  If you can nail that combination then you will be a candidate for best dressed every time.
