Maxine is Home

30 Oct

I got a phone call this evening, and my son asked, “Are your goats in?”  Of course that gives me visions of the entire herd being out on the road.  What he really wanted to know is if they were in the barnyard because he and Jeremy were bringing Maxine home.

They took her all the way through the cornfield to where the gates are between the field and the Back Forty.  The goats ran for the safety of the barnyard when they heard the ruckus, and we hollered for MJ.  Maxine added her comments, and that did get his attention.

She was happy to be off the trailer.

Then the llama showed up, and he’s not supposed to be going into the cornfield with the cows because he’s mean and spits on them.  I tried getting MJ to join us.  I held up a tiny ear of corn, and he really didn’t think that was worth the effort of walking that far.

I got in the Ranger and tried encouraging him to come up, and that just annoyed him, so he tried walking away.  I stopped and explained that all he had to do was walk to the cornfield and he could have his woman back.  I cajoled.  I chided.  I begged and pleaded.

Then Caleb joined me, and we escorted him, and maybe even poked him in the rump roast a time or two.  Finally, we got to the top of the hill and he saw Maxine.

Then it was much easier to convince him to keep walking.

He went right up to her and greeted her.

Of course, every animal says hi by sniffing.

This is the face that says, “That is not my smell.”

I know you’ve been with the bull again…

But he’s got a big heart and all is forgiven and they got down to the business of grazing.

As we reached that golden time of evening, they went off into the sunset waterway.

Such is the blissful life of my bovine.

It generally takes Maxine a bit to convince MJ that he doesn’t have to stay glued to her, but the really do love each other. 🙂
