A Lonely Little Duck

18 Sep

I have only one little duck left on the farm.

I lost over half the flock last July when the raccoons attacked.

In June, I lost my thirteen-year-old drake, Quackers.

Last week, half of my remaining hens died.  She had been injured last summer, and I’m surprised she lived as long as she did.

That leaves this one lovely little buff duck.  Hopefully, she’ll be okay until next spring when I can get her some company.

I wish I had a way to get her a new friend this fall, but I don’t know where I’d find her one.

I would hate to take just any duck that might have parasites since my birds are pretty clean. Hopefully she’ll be okay until spring.

wow, you have had a tough & rough time. sorry to hear this. ):

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 6:31 pm #

None of my ducks were young. Quackers was quite old for a duck.

  4. Nancy September 18, 2012 at 6:29 pm #

Same thing happened here, Teresa — we lost all of our ducks except Freddie — who is like your Quackers. He’s been with us for years. Maybe Freddie can come over to visit your little duck and go swimming. 🙂

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 6:32 pm #

      I’m sure she’d appreciate the company. 🙂

Hey Teresa, what great colors, and so reflective of the season. Sweet babi duck. Love these photos.

Thanks. She’s actually not much of a baby. She’s actually a little over five-years-old.

    Aww……. xo

This calls for a children’s story prompt for you: Little Buff Duck

It might scare children if I tell it like it is. 🙂

Aw! I hope he’s not too lonely.

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 7:42 pm #

She has a lot of other birds for company, but no other ducks. She’s lonely, but I hope she’ll be okay until I can get more in the spring.

She is so beautiful! I hope she does okay until Spring! Does she associate with the geese or are they uppity? 🙂

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 7:44 pm #

She’s penned with the peafowl and chickens for her safety. The geese tend to pick on the other birds.

Shes very pretty. I think she will be just fine with all the chickens, geese & goats on your farm til spring

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 8:16 pm #

I hope so. I adore my little ducks, but they are such vulnerable little birds.

  10. Alica September 18, 2012 at 8:41 pm #

She really is quite pretty! Maybe she’ll become buddies with Myson, and he’ll protect her! 🙂

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 8:43 pm #

She’s safe in her pen, but Myson might chat with her through the fence.

Great photos of the little duck. She looks as if she is being looked after especially well.

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 9:44 pm #

I do try, but those ducks are quite vulnerable (hence the phrase a sitting duck).

I have ducks! And I wouldn’t mind moving a few off my place. I have some younger ones that were hatched late summer. Email me if you are interested 🙂

    • Teresa September 18, 2012 at 10:13 pm #

      I’m sure she’d be happier.

    She’s a pretty duck.

I love the buff ducks. They aren’t flashy, but they are beautiful!

awww…she looks like a very nice duck and I think she looks lonely…hopefully you find some to share winter with her..great shots…loe the pool!

    • Teresa September 19, 2012 at 6:40 am #

The ducks love their kiddie pool! At least she doesn’t have to wait in line for her swim/bath. 🙂

These are lovely shots but what a sad story.
Glad to read she has a pen to keep her safe.

    • Teresa September 19, 2012 at 6:40 am #

I used to let the ducks free range, but it was too dangerous. She’s much safer in there.

This post has made me all teary. What a sweet looking duck though – hopefully she will make it to 13 years of age like your drake. Fingers crossed

So sorry. Thirteen is amazing for a duck. The two hens are five, and that’s getting old, so it wasn’t a shock. I was just hoping they both made it to spring when I ordered more little ones.

Thats a lot of lost birds! Hope this one finds shelter in the storm!

    Thanks for linking to WBW.

It was a horrible massacre last summer. 😦 These last two were old, so it wasn’t a shock.

Watch craiglist. I see ducks on it all the time. I really hate racoons!

    • Teresa September 19, 2012 at 6:42 am #

I used to think raccoons were adorable until I moved out here and got birds.

  19. Rosey September 19, 2012 at 9:24 am #

    Aw, she is a beaut!

    • Teresa September 19, 2012 at 4:35 pm #

I do love the buff ducks. 🙂

  20. epeavey1E September 19, 2012 at 12:26 pm #

I only have one duck also and she really gets along good with the hens, actually she thinks the old black hen is her Mama. The hens the duck stay with are the ones that have been injured by the rooster, and then moved to another fenced in area with a chicken tractor. She sure is a pretty duck hope she makes it to Spring. It would probably be better if she hadn’t been part of a larger community of ducks. Hopefully she’ll adjust and we can get her some company again.

    Poor little Quacker!

    • Teresa September 20, 2012 at 3:05 pm #

Hopefully, she’ll be okay as a lonely little duck until we can get her some company!

  22. et lite ØYEBLIKK September 22, 2012 at 12:48 pm #

Ohh, what a sad story! I hope that you can give this litle beautiful duck some company!
    🙂

    • Teresa September 22, 2012 at 8:10 pm #

It will probably be spring before she gets company. It would be really hard to try and bring new birds in this late in the year.
