Friendship Friday

What makes your home town unique?
Share some fun facts about where you live!

My hometown is Saluda, North Carolina (also where I currently live). It is a very tiny town: no stoplights, population 705. We only have an elementary school; you have to go to another town for middle and high school! (They had middle school when I was a kid but not high school.) We have two gas stations, a handful of restaurants, a historic downtown with lots of shops that cater to the many tourists, a delightful annual holiday called Coon Dog Day, art festivals, a river popular with tubers and kayakers, and various swimming holes and hiking trails. Not a bad place to live or visit!

My ancestors founded the town which was originally called Pace’s Ridge. (My great-grandfather, Ransom Pace, had 29 children!) Saluda comes from the phrase “green corn place” in Cherokee. It once was a railroad town and was famous for having the steepest mainline standard gauge grade east of the Rockies. Another interesting fact is that except for one village in Italy, more ozone is released in the Saluda atmosphere than any other place in the world. (Thanks to the phone book for giving me all the details!)

Here are some recent pics I took when visiting downtown:
