Spice cupcakes made with a vanilla cake batter and warm spices, to make a flavorful, from scratch cupcake that will make you go mmmmm. Cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg are the spices used in these cupcakes, lending a light spice taste that isn’t overpowering.
I recently had a cupcake order for two dozen spice cupcakes. All the spice cupcake recipes I could find seemed to use applesauce or apples in the batter. I just wanted plain ol’ spice cupcakes though! Then I remember my recipe for Snickerdoodle Cupcakes and figured I could just alter the recipe a bit to turn it into the spice cupcakes I was looking for. And these turned out lovely 🙂
These cupcakes would make a great Fall dessert too…I love anything spice in the Fall. With a cozy cup of hot cocoa. Ahhhh. Dreaming of cool weather, and we aren’t even into the dead heat of Summer yet! It gets HOT in Modesto in the Summer…like 110-degrees isn’t unusual. And that’s all fine and dandy, unless you work outside in the heat like I do…there’s no cooling off when you are wearing a bulletproof vest that doesn’t breathe hahaha. Anyways! Cupcakes….
One bite of these will have you dreaming of leaves falling, cozy sweaters and cool evenings.
Spice Cupcakes

- 2-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 2 teaspoons allspice
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1-2/3 cups white granulated sugar
- 5 eggs, room temperature
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1-1/4 cups milk, room temperature (I used whole milk)
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Line two cupcake tins with cupcake liners and set aside.
In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, cloves and salt. Set aside.
In bowl of your stand mixer, affixed with the paddle attachment, beat the shortening and butter until light and fluffy (1-minute). Add the sugar to the shortening and beat on medium speed until shortening and sugar mixture is light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time to the sugar mixture, beating each egg into the mixture completely before adding the next egg. Add vanilla extract and mix to combine. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
Add the flour mixture and milk alternately to the sugar mixture, ending with the flour. Beat the mixture until just incorporated. Do not over mix.
Pour batter into prepared cupcake pans, filling liners approximately two-thirds full. Bake cupcakes, one tin at a time, in preheated 350-degree oven for 18-minutes. Remove cupcakes from pan and place on wire rack to cool.
Notes
Store cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature.
I frosted my cupcakes with my Very Best Vanilla Buttercream Frosting. And dyed the frosting pink because….well pink is my favorite color!

June 14, 2018 at 10:00 PMI have always loved spice cake. I remember my mother making it when I was a young child. It is funny but she didn’t bake that much as I got older. I am the youngest of 8 children and my oldest sister and I are 17 years apart so I actually remember my siblings baking more than I do my mother baking. She did bake bread, but we were always baking up goodies, so I guess that she just let us. Anyway, back to the spice cupcakes. They sound so good and they are so pretty. I love how you are able to change things up and make what you are thinking about. Have a great weekend, even though you do have to work.
