It’s been quite a while since I last used one of my stencils. I don’t have very many, but they are fun to use when I remember them. I hadn’t originally planned to use one for this card, but in the end I decided it would add a bit of extra interest that I felt the card needed.
I started by cutting a square of watercolour paper to just bigger than the circle die I planned to use. I then ink blended onto the watercolour paper. I started with Seedless Preserves Distress Ink at the bottom, followed by Milled Lavender, then Spun Sugar and finally Spiced Marmalade. I worked in layers until I was happy with the coverage. I then put the Retro Flowers stencil from Marabu over the top and blended over again to add some texture to the background. Once it was done I die cut a circle from the panel.
Next I took one of the stamps from Altenew’s Wild Hibiscus stamp set and clear heat embossed it onto some white linen textured card stock. I wanted to add some soft colour to the flower so that it would have some dimension but still give the impression of being a white flower. I used my Seedless Preserves to add the colour as I knew the flower would be against the purple of the circle, and as white objects reflect the colours that are next to them it made sense for the shadows to have some purple. I then fussy cut the flower.
The final element for the card was the sentiment strip. I used a snippet of black card and heat embossed the sentiment, from Altenew’s Super Script, in white. I then trimmed the snippet down to fit the card. I wanted to add some shimmer to the black panel. Ideally I would have used some kind of shimmer spray but I don’t own any, so instead I just went over it a couple of times with my Wink of Stella.
I used my glue pen to adhere the flower to the edge of the sentiment strip, then flipped the whole thing over and added foam tape to the back of the sentiment strip and the overhang of the flower. I considered adding foam tape behind the circle to have two distinct layers of dimension but eventually decided to use my tape runner to adhere the circle flat to the card, then removed the backing paper from the foam tape and pressed the sentiment-flower combo into place.
I’m pretty pleased with how this card turned out. Whilst the ink blending is not perfect I do like how the colours turned out, and the extra texture from the stencil is a nice touch. I wasn’t sure that the flower would work exactly how I wanted but it came out pretty well too. I really like the shimmer on the black card – it’s a shame the camera didn’t capture it!
Love,
Lady Joyful

Super card! The colours you used on the ink blending look like a tropical sunset behind that pretty and delicate flower Charlotte. Super use of the stencil. The sentiment really pops on the black card. Thanks for joining us again at Less is More this week xx
