As I was reading blog posts this past weekend, I came across one from Lauren of Shooting Star Mag that piqued my interest! She and her blogging buddies, Ashley of Happy.Pretty. Sweet and Erika of Cat Eyes and Skinny Jeans, have a monthly feature called Glossies Made Me Do It. The idea is to find a magazine (glossy) article that inspires you to do something…and you do it! It could be a recipe you actual cook, or a book they recommend to read. Some beauty products that are on the Hot and Now list that everyone is raving about. Whatever sparks an interest, you can do it!
I was inspired by all the talk recently about three African-American women who played an integral part in the history of NASA and space travel. All across the nation, people have been raving about the movie created to tell their stories; a story that was left out of history books. As I was reading the February 2017 edition of Essence magazine, the To The Moon article, about the movie, was all I needed to go out and view it for myself. I made the decision that on Sunday afternoon, I would catch a matinee to see what the rave was all about, just in time for the Oscars!
Hidden Figures tells the story of mathematicians Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughan. They were the “human computers” behind the 1961 launch of the first American into space. Their analytical brains worked wonders to fuel NASA and America’s greatest achievements in space.
I highly recommend that everyone sees this movie. It is so inspirational and is an encouraging movie for young girls to see the barriers that were broken for mankind and in the area of STEM. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. It was practically unheard of for woman to have careers in these fields, let alone African-American woman.
The living legend, Katherine Johnson, was honored at the Oscars. She is the only living hero of the three incredibly, talented women. The way that Janelle Monae, Taraji P. Henson, and Octavia Spencer told their story, was spectacular! I could go into more details about the story, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. You have to go see it for yourself!
So, have glossies ever made you do anything? If so, you should join in on this monthly link up. In the meantime, tell me below something that glossies have made you do!
Yay, I’m so glad you decided to take part! That’s awesome the article made you interested enough to go see the movie. It’s one I really want to see too. My sister AND my parents have all seen it already and they loved it.

Hey! When I read your post about the linkup, I was sold! As much as I read magazines, I knew I had to participate. Yes, I had been putting it off forever, and missed opportunities to see it with friends. I read the article and said, “The hell with it! I’m going this weekend!” Thanks for hosting such an awesome linkup and you should go see the movie soon! 🙂

I’m so glad Glossies made you see “Hidden Figures” I not only saw the movie twice, but I wrote about it on my site and then did a whole different post on it for another site. It was my favorite movie of 2016 – http://www.tinseltine.com/2017/01/t-2016-wrap-up-in-movies.html

Hidden Figures was such a great movie! It’s so important for girls to have strong female role models especially in the workforce & in STEM. I was so fortunate to see the author Margot Lee Shetterly speak – I wrote about her speech here: https://styleandsavings.wordpress.com/2017/01/27/friday-faves-1-27-2017

I still haven’t seen Hidden Figures. 😦
I really want to take the kids to see it. My whole family has been wanting to see it.
I think it’s important for the kids to see it for sure, I wish schools across America would make seeing this movie a field trip.
I need to put together a post to link up. 🙂
XOXO
