For this Daily Marker Challenge, I have a bunch of box pop up cards planned. I really reflected last year and decided that I would put my card making focus on two things – One thing I felt I was good at (pop-up box cards) and one thing that could use some improvement (watercolour painting). This particular card worked for both focal points.
I arranged my box card as per usual. If you’re unfamiliar with how to make a box
base, please refer to my post here or watch my Youtube video below.
The patterned paper that I used was from the Melon Patch Collection by Craft Smith. This is an item that you can find at Micheals.
I stamped out images from MFT’s Soak Up The Fun Clear Stamps with Versafine Black Onyx Ink on Canson XL Watercolor Paper and heat set it because I’m impatient and wanted to start painting right away.
Using my Silver Black Velvet Round Brush, I watercoloured the images with a variety of watercolours that I had in my desk drawer. The brands included Daniel Smith, Quo, and Shinhan. Do I have a preference? Not really yet. I guess I don’t use them enough to really become attached to one brand over others. Once they dried, I cut them out using their coordinating die-namics.
I wanted the scene to look like the snorkellers were swimming underwater. So I adhered the reeds directly to my box card base with my Zig Two Way Glue Pen. I then proceeded to cut strips of acetate so I could mount the rest of my images to, to create the impression that they were swimming underwater. I adhered these strips with a combination of Ranger Multi Medium Matte and Scotch tape.
I originally didn’t have the bubbles but decided to add them in. I stamped them and just quickly added a highlight with Copic B00 (Frost Blue) and added some sparkle to them with my Clear Wink of Stella. Then I decided to also add some Glossy Accents to give the bubbles a bit of dimension.
To finish up the card, I heat embossed the sentiment,”Hope your birthday is a splash “, in WOW Opaque Bright White Embossing Powder on black card stock and adhered it to the front panel of the open box card.

This card was also entered in Simon Says Stamps Monday challenge.
