Friday Fictioneers – Pop Pop’s Antique Car

This is an encore of a previous entry for Friday Fictioneers. Our Purple Goddess has granted permisson to repeat our story since the photo prompt is having another go-round. Enjoy ….Friday Fictioneers - 2:26:2016 - al_forbes

The parade was on Sunday.

Nana was excited. She’d be driving Pop Pop’s antique car.

He’d purchased it at an auction. It took him 8 years to restore her.
Sadly, he never got to show her off.

“Will you be able to see, Nana?”, I asked.

“I’ll be dazzling wearing my wide brimmed yellow hat”, she beamed.

“But, the ophthalmologist said to limit your driving.”

“Lily, I wouldn’t miss showcasing your Pop Pop’s car for anything.”

She slept soundly, with a dazzling smile, that night.

I drove the car wearing her wide brimmed yellow hat.

She would have been proud.

Intriguing, sensitive, mysterious, loving, artistic and crackling with excitement for life is a pretty good description of who I am. I just retired from the world of art where I sold my Artfully Designed Handmade Jewelry for 28 years; although, art will always be a part of who I am no matter what venue I choose to express it in.

  1. At least Nana enjoyed thinking and dreaming about driving the car. Lily driving was a lovely tribute to both her grandparents. Good writing, Isadora. 🙂 — Suzanne

  2. That was really sad, but uplifting at the same time. Well done.

  3. This is bittersweet, neither Pop Pop nor the grandmother got to drive the car but t least the granddaughter knew what was right to do in their memory

    • If one dies peacefully, it can be a good thing for them and others.
But, it’s sad Nana couldn’t drive the car herself. But, with bad eyes,
perhaps it was best. Thank you, Michael for your very nice comment.
      Have a nice weekend …

  9. Great sequence of events and nailed the rhythms of the story telling. Bravissimo, Iz.! My dad had a 1934 Chrysler Airflow, only 1000 of them made. I got to drive it once. It was rebuilt and cost, as a pile of junk in 1988, $1000. A lot of money for the time. Sold it for $35,000 in 1992. My dad’s right hand went bad due to an old Navy injury in the war, so he can’t drive a stick. I have driven many cars in parades, so this is a nice story.

    • Gracias, mi amigo ….
My neighbor restores vintage cars. His go way back too. It’s great to see his fellow collectors in his driveway from time to time.
Some of them are in pastel colors. I guess they did that back then. He shows them in local car shows. They’re costly. He sells them from time to time too. If we only knew that things would increase in price we’d save everything.
Thanks for the interesting car history. Have a fabulous weekend …

  10. Querida Isadora,

    Love story, otra vez. 😉

Purple goddess? More like the purple airhead. I really forgot that I had posted this picture before. At least I didn’t tell the same story, although, both times I took a scene from my third book and both times they were about the same character.

    Shalom y abrazos,

    • Querida Rochelle,
I thought I’d get away from my grim stories of late. Although, Nana doesn’t quite make the parade.
However, the granddaughters love rises about that. Thank you for enjoying it a 2nd time. ❤️
No es cabeza de aire. I forget the photos I post on my photograpy blog. I believe there are some
that may not have been participants the first time around … AND … some may not have read our stories the
first time. There’s always something good that can come out of a small boo-boo.
LOL … on your repeat character. Perhaps, he channeled you to do that. One never know ….

  12. My granddaughter’s name is Lily. Perhaps one day she’ll wear a yellow hat and drive my car.
    A lovely, bittersweet ending here.

    • Lily is a favorite name of mine. I love the flower too. I had wanted to name one of my daughters that name. I was out-voted. She became Kaila instead. Oh well … democracy at play. 😁
I wear hatsand scarves all the time and tend to include them sometimes in my stories. Perhpas, she will wear a yellow hat someday. I’m sure she’ll look divine. Thank you RG for your comment and visit. Sweet words left here ….
