How To Get Your Kids To Beg You To Do Spelling

Anyone who’s followed my blog for even a short period of time is well-acquainted with the fact that my kids are a bunch of wiggle worms. They absolutely love to learn, but they absolutely hate to have to sit down for any extended period of time.

I’m a natural speller. Since I was a child, I’ve always been able to spell words correctly without so much as a glance at a dictionary or thesaurus. Unfortunately, that is not the case for most of my children. I’ve had some real issues for a few years with kids who are just struggling in this area. The last thing I want to do, however, is to make my kids sit for 45 minutes a day doing worksheets for a subject that frustrates them. 

Enter SpellingClassroom.com. 

When I first came across this spelling website, I was a little apprehensive. I am not a big fan of online courses. In most cases, they just seem to suck the life out of whatever topic they’re trying to teach.

That is not the case here. I am honestly so excited about this program that I don’t even know where to begin. There is so much to see and do.

For starters, it is an absolute delight for homeschooling parents and classroom teachers in that it makes record keeping for your students so easy. It keeps track of each individual child’s grades on each module and test, which can then be either emailed to the parent/teacher or printed out. If you’re simply wondering how your child is doing, you can log in and see all of their scores and where they’re at in the courses.

There are so many word lists available, and they cover all grades up through SAT vocabulary. I am so impressed with the thoroughness in each of these word lists– I’m like a kid in a candy store. I want to do it all!

As a matter of fact, just today we found a brand new spelling list which covers frequently misspelled words for 3rd through 5th grades. I’m so excited to get my kids started on this one…they need it.

If you prefer to use spelling words that you’ve hand-picked for your child, you can actually import them and create your own custom made word list. They’ve really thought of everything!

And let me tell you, these are not your ordinary, dry spelling lessons. They’re fun, interactive activities that make learning fun for your kids. There are search-a-words, crossword puzzles, spelling bees, flash cards, and word jumbles- just to name a few.

At first I was concerned that my kids weren’t physically writing with a pencil and paper, so I did have my kids do that on my own, BUT guess what else we discovered today? SpellingClassroom.com has installed a new pen and paper spelling test. It’s like they read my mind!

Now for the icing on the cake…your child will earn game tokens- yes, game tokens- for completed modules. You might be wondering what the game tokens are for. Well, SpellingClassroom.com has an entire page devoted specifically to games. And these are games that kids would actually play in their free time, like Dress Up, Connect Four, Mouse Trap, Bull’s Eye, and Bus Driver’s Math. There are so many games available. My kids were elated when they found this page. Each game costs one token.

So now my kids- who would never ask to do spelling- practically beg me to let them on my laptop so they can do their spelling, earn game tokens, and play games. That’s the only downfall…I never get to be on my own computer anymore. 🙂 It’s a small price to pay.

Looking back at earlier today, I think that each of my kids has been on this website at least three times today. One of my kids went through three separate word lists just today! And this isn’t ‘school’ to them. They are only too happy to complete some spelling modules in order to gain the opportunity to play games later. It’s a win/win situation.

As for those ‘sister subjects’ to spelling, like reading, writing, and composition, SpellingClassroom.com has those covered, too. There are novel studies for popular pieces of literature, such as: the first three Harry Potter books, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, and countless others, AND there are notebooking pages for them! Yay! We’re actually starting Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets tomorrow, so I am really looking forward to using these sheets!

There are also modules covering writing sentences and paragraphs, AND there are printable printing and handwriting worksheets!

Didn’t I tell you they thought of everything?? 

I could go on and on gushing over how much I love this spelling program, but instead, I’ll just tell you to go check it out yourself.
