An early Johnny Liddell, #3 in the series, but as he still works for a detective agency, rather than on his own. He also meets Muggsy Kiely for the first time and she is more attractive than later portrayed. The mystery involves jewel thefts and insurance rackets, as well as the detective agency that Johnny works for being the go-between between the thieves and the insurance people, leaving the police out. The police, and Liddell, are not happy about this. When a new operative gets bumped off in Johnny’s place, he takes it personal and goes after the thieves, even though it upsets the lucrative arrangement his agency has in place. All this makes the solution somewhat obvious, though.
