Red Berries, White Clouds, Blue Sky

This middle reader novel gives a good sense of the problems and emotional issues that internees had to deal with during WWII. The young girl who is the main character goes through a crisis of conscience about her duty to the country that has detained her in what seems like a prison camp. As she deals with prejudice inside and outside, and sees her family members change, she is forced to face the real question of citizenship and what it means to her and her family. The novel is well-researched and will give readers a good intro to this part of history as well as a discussion-starter about bigotry. It is written for middle readers but never talks down to them.
