In a random turn of events, I’ve decided to participate in the One Room Challenge this season.
If you’re not familiar with the One Room Challenge, there is essentially a group of 20 “official” bloggers asked to participate each Wednesday and then every Thursday, other bloggers playing along can link up. Each group is tasked with completing an entire room makeover in just six short weeks.
The reality is, I’m completely insane for joining my very first time when I’ll be gone for almost two full weeks of the event. Not only that, we are in the throes of our massive backyard renovation. But hey, what’s another room makeover to add to the to-do list 😉
So, between now and May 12th, I’ll be sharing updates to our laundry room. Some of you may be thinking “What?! You already finished that room.” True. But I’ve been over it for some time. It basically feels like a little girl’s bedroom to me and it doesn’t really flow with the rest of our house. Granted, it’s a huge improvement from where we started just over three-and-a-half years ago when we moved in and is still a pretty space, but it’s time for it to fit in with the rest of our home. You can see the original laundry room makeover (and all sources)Â here.

Here’s what I plan to complete/update over the next six weeks (those with a ‘?’ are maybes):
- Remove stars from walls
- Paint cabinets
- Update countertops (?)
- Create an iron / ironing board storage station
- New washer & dryer
- Find a new runner and/or install concrete tile floor
- Find new art
- Organize inside of cabinets
- Create pretty storage on the open shelf
- Paint baseboards
- New light fixture (?)
Since I decided to join the ORC party so late in the game, I don’t have an official mood board or design plan to share with you. Instead, I’ll share the random ideas floating around my head on how to handle the design elements. The picture below shows the color inspiration for the space. Keep in mind, our appliances will be black, so I need to work that in as well:
We have a new washer and dryer set coming soon and I’m pretty excited about a lot of the features it has to offer. The pair will also help to add some contrast in this otherwise all-white room. It will also be nice to have a set that isn’t over a decade old and one that doesn’t have knobs fall off every time we try to wash or dry a load 😉
I’m contemplating a linear iron chandelier like this one to tie into the black appliances better. I love the chandelier we currently have but think something like this may be a better fit for the new overall look.
I also want to incorporate some beachy or natural/botanical-looking art. I really love these printables that are not only beautiful, but crazy affordable. I’m guessing you could get them printed in large sizes rather cheaply at any local print studio.
Our ironing board and iron have randomly been stashed into one of our guest bedroom closets. Definitely not the ideal situation, so we plan to DIY something over the next week to address the situation. I’ve seen several ironing board/iron shelf combos like this one around the web, but none seem to have any bit of style at all. So, I’ll be attempting a DIY version that will be much more pleasing to the eye.
So, even though I’ll be out of town two of the next six weeks, I plan to have a full reveal ready for you on May 12th! Each Thursday I’ll be providing an update with the progress I made over the week prior. Overall, my project may be a bit underwhelming compared to some of the others in the link-up, but the challenge serves as the perfect guide to kick my butt in gear! Do you think I’m completely crazy for attempting this one on such a tight schedule?
Be sure to check out all of the other One Room Challenge participants over at Calling It Home. It will definitely be a fun series to follow along with!

Interesting to see what you come up with as I love the before picture already! My laundry room is unfortunately in a finished part of my basement and will likely never make a blog appearance!

Fab fab fab inspiration! So similar to a lot of my inspiration for our current basement makeover. I’m doing the living room for the ORC. Why not do two major projects at the same time, right? Can’t wait to see what you do Sarah!
