DIY Red Hot Lip Balm and Scrub

When Ashley and I decided to brainstorm ideas for our February Maker’s Mix-Up themes, I knew we had to throw in something Valentine’s Day related.  So we decided to go with a “red” theme.  I know most people seem to gravitate towards chocolate on Valentine’s Day.  But I tend to get excited when I see Red Hots and cinnamon hearts appear on the store shelves again.  So for this week’s Maker’s Mix-Up, I bought a box of Red Hots candy to use in a fun, little beauty DIY.

I love cinnamon candies with a kick.  Atomic Fireballs, cinnamon gummy bears, Red Hots – I love them all!  I had plans to make a cinnamon infused body scrub, but decided to use my Red Hots candy to create a cinnamon infused lip balm and lip scrub instead!  I picked up stackable storage containers used to hold beads to use as my lip balm and lip scrub containers, but you can use any sealed container.

Red Hots Candy

The first thing I had to do was eat half a box of Red Hots crush up a bunch of Red Hots.  Just pour a bunch of Red Hots candies into a plastic bag, close it up, and use a meat tenderizer to smash them into tiny pieces!  I added a teaspoon of crushed Red Hots to my lip balm container, a teaspoon to another container to make scrub, and saved the rest for later.

I melted down coconut oil and let it cool a little bit before pouring it into my container.  I added a little petroleum jelly, gave it all a good stir, and then popped my container in the fridge to allow my lip balm to harden.

I made my scrub the same way, except I left out the petroleum jelly, cut the amount of coconut oil in half, and added two tablespoons of granulated sugar.  I let the mixture harden in the fridge and then stacked it with my lip balm container.

This easy-to-make lip duo would be a great homemade gift for your bestie or a fun project to make with your kids!  The longer the lip balm and lip scrub sit, the more infused they’ll get with cinnamon flavor.  The lip balm is super moisturizing and the lip scrub gently exfoliates, making them a great treat for your lips!

Ashley and I would love to see what RED themed projects you’ll come up with this week!  Last week we all shared delicious MINT recipes.  Here’s what you missed:
