If you’re a glass is half-empty person I’m kinda down to the wire on a Memorial Day wreath. If you’re a glass is half-full person I’m extraordinarily on top of things for the Fourth of July. I’ll let you be the judge. 😉
I started with a basic straw wreath and some 4″ wide satin ribbon.
I’d like to tell you there was some master plan as to why I didn’t take the plastic off the wreath first, but let’s be honest here: it wasn’t necessary and time was of the essence, so I just didn’t bother. In wrapping the ribbon around my wreath to cover it I pinned the back about every fourth wrap to keep it from slipping. Once finished it should look like this:
Don’t worry that it’s a little lumpy. We’re going to cover most of it and you won’t be able to tell. If things like this bother you {and let’s face it, the reason I’m even addressing this topic is because it clearly bugged me}, you can use a styrofoam wreath form instead, but they cost a bit more.
I then raided my extensive stash of ribbon scraps, and grabbed everything I could find in red, white and blue. Solids, stripes, and polka dots; grosgrains, satins and sheers. If you are not obsessive about over-buying ribbon like I am, I would guesstimate you need about 6-8 rolls of ribbon for this project. Start tying bows. By the end of this project you will become a bow-tying expert. In fact, people from far and wide will come to admire your bow-tying prowess and ooh and aah at your skills. Trust me on this.
Then attach to your wreath. You can either hot glue the bows or slip a stick pin inside the loop of the bow to hide it and jab it into the wreath form. All depends how much you like to rip apart your wreaths to reuse them for future projects.
I’d guess that’s about a third of the way finished. So keep tying bows! Fill as much of the top surface of the wreath as possible, mixing your sizes and textures as you go. And that’s all there is to it.
