This was a nice story of a Mafatu, a Polynesian boy who is afraid of the ocean after his mother was killed by it. He decides to face his fear as a teenager and leaves the island on a canoe. He faces many hardships on a deserted island and learns that courage is facing your fears and overcoming them even when it's hard. Written in 1940, there are a few cultural references that may be awkward for modern readers, but overall it is an exciting story for young readers.
