Easy Dessert – Chocolate Covered Strawberries With Dulce De Leche

chocolate-dipped-strawberries-with-dulce-de-leche

I have a confession to make. We are not big fans of Valentine’s Day. It’s not that we don’t love the idea of a valentine or have respect for the Saint… far from that. We simply refuse to go through the motions for the day. I don’t expect flowers, a shower of gifts and the whole nine yards. I think this day is highly over-rated and commercialized. So sue me, Hallmark!

But this celebration seems to bring out the best desserts ever. And what better than chocolate covered strawberries, right? Given the exorbitant rate of these little gems, I decided to go ahead and make them at home.

All you need are juicy, red strawberries.

Pick the freshest lot you can find.

Next you need chocolate. I used semi-sweet chocolate chips. Just do your thing.

Since the recipe itself is very simple, I played around a bit with my camera!

If you (or in my case, the men of the house) haven’t already eaten all those chocolate chips, let’s go ahead with the recipe, shall we?

Strawberries & Chocolate Chips

One more thing. Notice the brown thing in the cup below? Here’s a question for you: What is as good as or even better than chocolate?

Caramel, Chocolate & Strawberries

Can’t figure it out?

Its dulce de leche… on chocolate covered strawberries. It is heaven, I tell ya!

Read on for the recipe.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

You will need:

  • Strawberries – 12 – 15
  • Chocolate chips – 1 cup
  • Dulce de leche – 2 tbsp (optional)

How to:

  • Wash the berries and dry them completely. Prepare a large baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  • Melt the chocolate chips. Use the double boiler or microwave method. Both are explained quite comprehensively here.
  • Dip or cover the strawberries in the chocolate and place them on the baking sheet. Chill for a while in the refrigerator.
  • Now, here is what you do if you want dulce de leche on them. Just melt a few tablespoons in the microwave (20-30 seconds), and smear or drizzle on the chilled chocolate covered strawberries.  Chill for a while again and enjoy!

Notes:

  • Dulce de leche or Spanish milk jelly is got by heating sweetened condensed milk. It is similar, but not the same as caramel. But you could just drizzle caramel on the berries, if you cannot find dulce de leche.
  • You can also use crushed nuts and cover the strawberries in them after dipping in the chocolate. Or try a white chocolate drizzle over the dark one or vice versa. You are only limited by your imagination!

I didn’t melt the dulce de leche all the way, and just smeared a small spoonful over the berries. Hence the rustic look. I also left a few of them covered with just the chocolate. It was all unbelievably delicious anyway!

How’s that for a lovely, light dessert? I hope you try making these. Rather, I insist you make these soon.

So tell me, do you do Valentine’s Day? Or would you rather treat every day like one? Whichever way you feel, don’t forget the dessert!

Here’s another one made with fresh strawberries – A sweet strawberry cake with strawberry whipped cream frosting.

  1. Hi lovely lady.
This is my first time on your Beautiful blog. Ever thing looks so yummy for Valentine’s day. We have them ever year with a great glass of wine. This would look great on my Tablescape come see. Hoping you and your family have a wonderful week and a great Valentine’s Day also.
    God Bless.
    Diane.

  2. Oh my, this sounds heavenly! Me and my hunny don’t make a big fuss for Valentine’s Day either. We like to use any excuse to have a celebration, so we’ll go out for brunch in a few days, but we don’t obligate each other to give presents.

  3. Scrumpdillyicious! Chocolate dipped Strawberries happen to be one of my favourites as well. ☺ What I often use for mine is; Baker’s Chocolate and add a tad of shredded paraffin wax (used for canning/baking) which gives the melted chocolate a nice glossy shine. Shall definitely try your tip using dulce de leche . (Thank you!) -Brenda-
