My son has asthma.
Not SUPER terrible, but the coughing at night keeps us all up.
In his room there is a door that leads out to a balcony.
A totally USELESS balcony, let me add.
Someday, I hope to add some walls around it and turn it into an upstairs laundry room…..D.R.E.A.M.
I discovered that the carpet around that terrible useless door that leads to the useless balcony had mildew.
In panic mode that this might be contributing to his coughing, I tore out the carpeting in his room and it looked like this when I did:
Before, the carpet in there was white with large stains from the time he climbed out of his crib at 18 months old, opened the Vaseline on his nightstand, and painted the carpet.
Note: Vaseline NEVER completely comes out of carpet. Obvs.
Without a lot of money to spend.
Make that NO money to spend (my mom and pops helped us out), I found some AMAZING peel and stick faux wood vinyl at Lowes.
Yes! Peel and stick!
So, last weekend, my sister and I did the following:
Ripped out the carpet.
Discovered that chip board laid under the carpet.
According to the directions, you shouldn’t lay peel and stick vinyl on chip board.
We did anyway (I’ll let you know if I ever encounter a problem because of this).
We primed the chipboard with some Kilz Primer and another primer recommended for use under the vinyl.
One that was dry, we went to work laying down the vinyl.
The last row was the hardest as we trimmed little by little to get it to fit just right.
We were able to trim it using a utility knife.
We put a transition piece from the carpet in the hall to the new vinyl flooring.
It turned out like this:
Seriously, I think he has the best looking floor in the house now!
Can you believe that is peel and stick vinyl?
No, I’m not being compensated in any way from a peel and stick vinyl company or Lowes….I am just impressed, and I love to share when I find something great!
Yes, it looks amazing! If I wasn’t renting i would want to do this to the play room 🙂
Raychel
I am thoroughly impressed! Hope your son feels better.
It looks awesome what an idea! You are so talented.
Oh my gosh Carly!!! It looks amazing!!!! We want to do something like that in the living room….and get rid of our stained carpet. And I’m with you on that dumb balcony we have we would love to turn ours into a laundry room too. Let me know if you ever have a simple/cheap solution for that… (dreaming…..of the day)
You are not afraid to tackle this yourself and you are relentless to do it right and make it work.
You and your sister deserve much applause for this project. It is truly BEAUTIFUL!
We just finished doing this to our entire house (after having to rip up the real wood floor that the kids destroyed by flooding the house) We couldn’t be happier with it!! It looks great, it’s super simple to clean and was cheaper than carpet (we found ours at Lumber Liquidators for $.79 sq ft!)
I LOVE this stuff!
Thinking about doing this to our guest bedroom. The carpet was ruined in an unfortunate leak from our A/C unit. We desperately need to pull it up but I haven’t figured out what I want to do yet.

Actually, that fix is great.
I love the “we did it anyway”. Sometimes when your cash is limited and your time is not, you don’t put in the perfect flooring on the perfect surfaces.
I had our kitchen floor redone with the ABSOLUTE cheapest fake looking wood flooring. They asked me what style, color, etc. I said “the one that is on sale”. Almost always there is one “featured” fake wood flooring on sale for under $1.00 per square foot. Usually one is a honey oak style…. 🙂 I told my hubby when the floor “dies” we will have more money (can’t have much less…), and at least until then I don’t have to want to throw up looking at the old flooring.
Awesome! I love it.
My son has asthma too, and I’ve been wanting to tear up his carpet and replace it (we have cats, and they used to claim his room as their own before he was born-and of course cat dander is almost impossible to get rid of)- so this post has been a nice bit of motivation for me 🙂 Yours turned out great!
Wow, I cannot believe that is vinyl, thanks for linking up!
Looks fabulous! Not like vinyl at all. We have our own little asthmatic boy so I can totally identify with ripping up the carpet. Anything to stop that wheezing and coughing.
Just visiting from Simply Sweet’s linky.
Blessings,
Alison
This looks great! I would do it in a heartbeat!
Amazing results! It is hard to believe that it is peel and stick vinyl. I hope this project helps your son’s cough to subside. 😉
Thanks for linking your creative talent to my party each week.
