Style on the Go

Today marks the first segment in our Fashion Friday Challenge where we tackle some of your burning fashion topics. Today’s topic is how to remain stylish as a busy mom. This topic is near and dear to my heart because at one time I was the mother of twin toddlers (they are now 13) and it was all I could do to remember to brush my hair when the time came to hit the road. Lucky for me I found a few simple pieces that mixed and matched well so that I could be ready for any occasion at a moments notice.
Start with the Basics
If your basics are not right, style will never come. Invest in a minimal amount of bottoms as those will be the least memorable item in your wardrobe so they can be recycled in other looks. Choose a black trouser, a dark washed trouser jean, a grey and khaki slack for dressy occasions. Then, choose a chino style khaki pant, a skinny jean in a dark washed denim and black and a casual denim capri as the foundation of your wardrobe. Look for fabrics that wash well and are wrinkle free whenever possible. The less time spent ironing, the better. Choose one piece with interesting detail, in this collection that piece is the cream top with the tie at the waist. It is an excellent alternative to a plain top.
Select a Variety of Layering Pieces
Your layering pieces are where you can incorporate a slight bit of trend in your wardrobe. In this collection, the aqua cardigan is in the hot color for spring and can be worn with both the casual and dressy bottoms. The trick to choosing layering pieces is select ones that would be appropriate in both a casual and dressy setting giving each piece more value and less cost per wear. Also,  look for classic cuts in your layering like the tailored blazer with the black piping. Those will last in your wardrobe year after year.
Select a Variety of Accessories
The easiest way to bring your look to the next level as a busy mom is to invest in your accessory collection. These are easy, inexpensive ways to add variety and incorporate the latest color of the season.
Creating a fashion forward style is all about starting with the correct foundation and then layering and accessorizing with the seasons hottest colors. Once you have chosen the correct pieces, the next step is to simply rock it with ease.
Tune in next week as we continue our Fashion Friday style challenge. Feel free to leave a comment with your fashion challenges for a chance to have your questions answered by the experts. The collection is an example of a great silhouette combination. Look for versions of these pieces at stores like Target, Khols, Macy’s, JCrew, or Banana Republic. They have affordable prices and great coupon policies.

  6. Here via Sitscomm linky fest! I like the point about the basics having not to stand out. We tend to go for the glitzy fun stuff in shops but forget that it’s actually more important to buy ‘boring’ clothes! So that we have something to wear WITH the glitzy fun stuff! 🙂

  7. I love this post. I absolutely love fashion but sometimes working from home doesn’t allow me to be fashionable so whenever I know I have to go out, I jump at the chance to throw something cool on even if we are just gong to the local Publix. I never got why moms would go to the supermarket with a full face of makeup but now I know why! 🙂

  8. I love love love love love that orange sweater! LOVE!
