Drop Cloth Drapes & Re-Do in Dining Room

My dark dining room has been undergoing a change to the lighter side.
My style seems to be "step by step"
and "piece by piece".
Is it often difficult for you to make a decorating decision?
My daughter walks in and says, "Do this, this, and this."
I have to cogitate, reflect, be sure.
I don't know why....this project only involved
$20 for 2 drop cloth panels and $10 for chair fabric.
Oops, there was a little spray paint involved!
Here's the before....too dark and brown for me.
First, I moved the ladder backs back to the kitchen.
Then (as suggested by daughter) painted the Hepplewhite (?) chairs Heirloom White.
(Actually Mr. Nest did this for me....he knows he does a better job!).
Then I used my French writing fabric on the seat.
Next I upholstered my MIL's beautiful chairs myself.
I showed how to do the double piping here.

After yanking down the red valances, it felt better already.
Now, I'm still a huge fan of red, but I needed more light in this room.

After

Here's my "how to".
Use one 6 X 9 drop cloth panel from Home Depot on each window.
Follow Miss Mustard Seed's direction for bleaching in the washing machine.
Fold down top (right sides together) 13 inches.
We have 8 foot ceilings, so that worked for us.

Now fold hem under once and stitch.
This is the only sewing you will do!
I have made lined drapes, pleated drapes, and all sort of intricate valances in the past,
but - wow - was this ever a piece of cake!

Mr. Nest got them hung the night before Thanksgiving!
Here are a few shots of my Thanksgiving table and dining room completion.
(I know, I know, you have already moved on to Christmas - just humor me!)

Now that I have this finished, it's time to move on to Christmas decorating.
I'll be joining

Kim @Savvy Southern Style for Boring to Better
Have a wonderful week!
Blessings to you

Oh, Linda! The drapes are gorgeous and I love what you did with your chairs. The room looks fresh and lovely! I love the fabric you used for the upholstered chairs, too. What a great job you did.

I have a ton of the drop cloth material left that I made two table runners with. I love to make something else and have been racking my brain. This sounds like a nice project. Can I send the fabric to you?! ;-D

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend!

XO,
Jane

I love your new beautiful look and the drapes...oh, they are fabulous. Did you just hang them from one of those little curtain round hooks?
I would love to do this in the bedroom I will tackle after Christmas. Thanks for the inspiration.
And, your table looks fantastic.

Those drop cloths are amazing! I totally understand about the piece by piece of decorating. If I waited until a room was done to show anyone, I wouldn't have a blog ever!!

Oh my goodness, I just answered my own question and found your tutorial on the drapes. I can't believe they are drop cloths! They must be so stiff & thick, but they don't look stiff. Did you dump lots of fabric softener in the water after you bleached them? Wow, they photograph really well. How nice that you have a daughter that helps give you decorating tips - I do that at my Moms house all the time too ;)

Oh my stars, I love it all!! Thanks for sharing it on my blog. Yes those are the same chairs, or very similar for sure. So funny we both painted ours. Mine are from my MIL. And I love the drop cloth drapes, but do they need to be bleached? Do they look very different that way? And I am going to look at your tutorial for the MIL chair you reupholstered. I need to do the same to some chairs, so I'll check that out. So glad you know who Lumpy is!!
