Block letters are a fun way to add a personal touch to a room or house. Lots of stores sell pre-cut, pre-painted letters for upwards of $10 per letter. That can get pretty expensive when your last name is 11 letters long.
Craft Cuts is an online site that provides wooden letters, it’s great but it can be pricy.
Here is a great alternative for block letters using cardboard!
First draw or trace your desired letter onto cardboard. If you want your letter to stand up by itself, make sure the bottom is flat. Cut out the letter using an exacto knife, make sure you are cutting on top of something and not just your kitchen table to prevent scratches.
Once you cut out your first letter (the front), trace it so it will be the back, and cut it out.
Now you have 2 separate but identical letters. Next, cut connecting strips of cardboard to your desired width. The wider the connecting strips the more depth your letters will have.
As you can see I made my connecting strips about 1.5-2 inches wide and as long as the cardboard was, that way I could cut off the extra at the end. Once you have the strips ready, start wrapping them around the edges of your letter, securing with tape. You may have to bend the cardboard prior to wrapping it on the letter to make it more pliable.
Once your letter is a solid shape, you can dress it however you want. Paint it, wrap fabric or yarn around it, or use lots of glitter (hmm that gave me an idea!).
I wrapped mine in leftover lace from our wedding.
Some tips: use sturdy cardboard for heftier letters, print out your letters from word and trace onto cardboard for neat, even letters, and to keep your letters from falling over pour some sand or rocks inside before securing with tape. If you want to paint your letters, opt to hot glue it together instead of tape, it will be easier to paint over.
