It’s true! You can easily transform a totally BLA mat into something swoon worthy!
If you’ve been reading along lately, you may remember that I have been painting the hallway and laundry room {see laundry room transformations here}. I have a ton of projects that I’ve been trying to complete in these areas {I counted yesterday and I have 15 draft posts of things in the works and counting- OH MY!} and my ugly mat was starting to really stand out… and not in a good way… so I painted and stenciled it!
I like to have a mat at the end of our hallway, because the door there accesses the garage and backyard – and although we have a shoe bench – dirt still gets tracked in and the mat helps stop it {or at least I like to think so}. The problem with finding a mat or rug I liked was that the way the walls go in {where there are two rooms across from each other} near the end of the hall, means that not just any mat will fit. I found this brown one at Costco for about $12. It’s not very pretty, but it fits. After all the effort of painting the hall, creating our gallery wall and kids art display, the ugly brown mat JUST HAD TO GO. I wondered if I could just paint it using the wall paint that I used for the hallway {Revere Pewter}, and then stencil it. I figured the worst that could happen is I need to go out and buy a new mat.
So I got out my roller and set to work. I ended up using three coats of paint {the mat sucked up quite a bit of paint!} until I got the look I wanted. Then I took my wall stencil {I think it’s called Casablanca Trellis} from Royal Design Studio. I decided to use the left over door/trim paint which was white {cloud white} for this part, so I wouldn’t have to go out and buy any more white paint. It worked really nicely! To give it some protection from dirty shoes, and also so I could wipe it clean if needed, I added a thick coat of satin poly acrylic.
I love the result and I think the best part for me is that now I can photograph furniture on it instead of on the white and blue checked linoleum floor!

Wow, this turned out great! What kind of mat is that? A rubber mat? A foam mat? I Have 2 of those foamy mats in my kitchen that I have been dying to paint….maybe I will do it after all!

Thanks! I don’t think it’s a foam mat – but it’s not rubber either. I think some kind of synthetic material. The top of it had a surface that was very easy to wipe clean – I don’t know if this helps!
