Party Planning: Preparing Your Home for the Big Day

As we continue our Holiday Party Planning week here at BNOTP, if you haven't already, you may want to read the first post about preparing/sending invitations for your party.

Start Early and Have a Plan:
Today we are on to another step in getting ready for the party...preparing our home for the big day. I wish I could just tell you to click your heels together three times like Dorothy...or maybe wiggle your nose like Samantha, and your house would be all clean, decorated and ready for your upcoming party. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite work that way. So what's the secret? It's really simple...start early and have a plan.

I'm a big "list maker" from way back. It's an automatic stress reliever for me and makes me feel a bit more in control when I have it all down in black and white. I know it can be a bit overwhelming when you stop to think about what you need to do to get ready for a party, but once you have it down on paper, you're in charge and you can create a plan of attack.

Disclaimer: If I'm having a few good friends over for dinner, I don't prepare this way. In fact, they are lucky if I vacuum the downstairs. :) But when I'm having a big party (or at least big to me) of 20-40 people coming to my home, I want things to be in tip-top shape. Take from this post what you can use and discard the rest. Remember, the most important thing is to enjoy this life and take time to share it with those you care about...your friends and your family. As the old saying goes...this ain't no dress rehearsal! ;)

Schedules Below are Written As If You Will Have No One Assisting You With the Preparation:
As I jotted down this cleaning/preparation schedule, I imagined I was creating it for someone who works full-time and will be doing all the preparations for the party alone each evening after work and on weekends.

If you do not work full-time and/or you will have someone to assist you (older children, a spouse, a housekeeper) you are way ahead of the game and may not need to start preparing as far in advance as I've recommended. Although, it certainly makes it easier as you approach the party date if you've gotten a lot of stuff done ahead of time...help or no help. :)

I'm sure I have left off some things or your situation may be different. You may need to add or subtract some items from these list.

Hi Susan, like you, I'm a list maker from way back. I always feel like once I write it down the plan becomes a reality and I can put it to work. I start in July for my Holiday Open House. Being a retail store owner the preparations have to begin very early. I'm enjoying following your words of advice for preparing for an event.

Hi Susan! I am a list lover and maker and so enjoy reading other lists for new ideas. You are definitely an experienced party giver. I would suggest one more thing to the hostess-to-be: choose your outfit and jewelry a few weeks ahead, and try it on! You never know! And the last thing you need before the guests arrive is to worry about how you look. You need to sparkle just like the house! I'm looking forward to your food ideas! Linda

Susan, this is so perfect. I have operated on lists like this for years, because otherwise I'm apt to forget a ton of things.

How kind of you to make it so that we can print these out. The thing I add to the last 30 minutes is pray that all who come to our home will be blessed. And then I turn UP the music and greet our guests at the door with a festive drink.

Oh I just love this!! Susan, I do this kind of list also, but I think it's because I spent 14 years in the Air Force!! I'm not sure about you, lol!! Seriously, though, I entertained as a musician at a lot of general officers dignitaries homes, and between working with the hosts, and their staff, I found this is exactly what they do. I have to do it this way because if I don't then I will forget something. I love lists and plans. Wonderfully detailed! Thanks Susan!! Really, this gets me in the Christmas spirit!!

I am really finding these posts helpful for the party I am planning. I don't mean to get stressed out, but I can get pretty irritable the day of the party, and then it never fails, everything goes fine and I wonder why I worried!! Hopefully I will fuss less with your tips!

XO,
Jane

Oh Susan, your party planning list is so helpful. Especially for me, the day of the event and the countdown until guests arrive.

I have young kids who normally stay when we have parties at home. We had a wine tasting and cocktail party this past New Year's Day, and I asked my MIL to come a couple of hours early. She came early, relaxed and had a cocktail before the guests arrived. The tip: emphasize that you would like for her to keep the kids occupied so you can make last minute preparations.

Thanks so much for sharing these fabulous party plan tips.

All the Best,

Requi

Great Lists! Thank you for making them printable.
I usually put the Last Hour list up on the mirror in my bathroom so I know it doesn't get misplaced in the cleaning!
Especially thanks for the babysitter reminder =)
Happy Countdown or CountUP to you!
