I've mentioned before my husband is a hoarder. I sometimes get frustrated, and then I look closer and wonder...maybe it's a good thing.
I had asked him what on earth he was planning for these, he said (and I couldn't tell if he was smirking or laughing) he is going to become 'Larry the Locksmith'. Oh brother...as expected they've
...high up in the rafters of the lean-to where they were forgotten. (They will get displayed in my new craft room when I finish it)
My wind chimes are missing a lot of the 'tubes'. What a mess!
And I had an idea...but of course he had to pick out the keys I was allowed to use, because the others are "harder to find" (or he just likes keeping his junk?).
I gathered supplies and set about creating my idea.
Fishing line (not shown: glue gun & scissors)
Wiring the keys...
I used a triple knot to tie on the keys and glued the wire to the top.
I had to replace the string because it had deteriorated over the years.
I kept a short length of the original twine to glue the fishing line in place.
I had the keys laid out according to the length of the nylon string to get the cascading effect the original wind chimes had.
Do you remember this picture? You might have seen it here.
I'm hoping with the amount of glue I used it will hold up!
And here it is finished...looks busier than I expected, then again, I put 2 keys on a few of the lines. But oh wow, does it sound wonderful!! Larry told me I need to make a video so you can hear how great it sounds, but the one I made turned out funny. So I'll try another...then again, I have no idea if (or how) I can upload a video here. lol
It was night when I finished but I couldn't wait to test them out. So I hung it in the pool room. Can you see the old sea shell wind chime hanging from the light beside it? Yep, I love chimes.
And that old rusty bottle opener? It was hanging with the keys, so I had to use it.
By the courtyard...hard to see with all that's going on behind it.
Guess I have to trim the string...oops
Yes, it was a lot of work, but I just love the sound of it.
If you saw my last post, you saw a teaser...did you think this might be what was coming? And now, what am I going to do with all those other keys still hanging around? I have no an idea...my craft room will need decorations!

Your key chime is lovely. Keys make a lovely sound tinkling in the wind. I've made a key chime before and love it. I also used old keys to set into a mosaic stepping stone.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Have you any cutlery you not sure what to do with. Use this as well.
ReplyDeleteLove the look of keys.
Your key chimes turned out just wonderful! Nancy
ReplyDeleteI love this Debbie, it looks absolutely marvellous, and I can only imagine how beautiful & poetic it sounds when the wind blows. Love the can opener too, very handy. ;) I haven't uploaded a video on my blog before either, but I had a look, and there's a "Insert a video" clapperboard icon to click on. Congrats & good luck! Best wishes.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't had a chance to do too much visiting at Cheri's party yet, but saw that you had visited and decided to pop right over. I think your key wind chimes are genius! I love keys, but I don't have any really old ones. I just like tying them on things or using them on cards. I'll bet they do make a lovely sound.
ReplyDeleteOk don't tell the hubby this but I now declare him a genius. You see you never know when you may need 2,030 keys LOL!~ This is super cute. Thanks for sharin.g
ReplyDeleteHow ingenious to use old keys. I love wind chimes and those would be wondeful...Stopping by from Debbiedos - I am a new follower.....

Oh my gosh, this is such a fun idea!! What a great upcycle of old keys!!!
ReplyDeleteI love the keys...my husband would be stingy too...What a great way to share...Blessings, Becky
ReplyDeleteFantastic! Your wind chime looks antique - love it! Thanks for sharing this fun idea Debbie!
ReplyDeleteI Love windchimes! I bet the sound of the keys against the metal rod is really nice. Old keys? You can use it for jewelry in some fashion. I don't think it's old enough for steampunk jewelry but I bet it'll still make pretty pendants :)
ReplyDeleteSince you mentioned this to me, I wanted to come by and have a look because I missed this one! So awesome! I bet it sounds wonderful! You have a lot of patience...and a lot of keys!!
ReplyDeleteNow I can make one using all the keys my Mother saved over the years- bucket full! One idea - a school asked for Keys- and hung them in a straight line around the school hall ways- Learning is the Key to your Future!
