This dresser is a keeper. It’s a bit too fancy for my taste but sturdy and has lots of storage potential. Would you believe me if I told you I got this piece FREE off Craigslist?
Here it is before the paint job:
Materials used
– Benjamin Moore Advance Semi-Glass paint. I mixed a bit of brown with my favorite charcoal color, 1547. The yellow drawers were painted in Advance 2154-20.
– Sand paper
– Benjamin Moore oil-based All Purpose Primer
Process
The dresser was lightly sanded, primed, then painted two coats of the gray. The drawer pulls are original and I didn’t even clean them before putting them back on. Was slightly tempted to paint them white but didn’t want them to stand out so much… just kinda blend in and do the job they were designed to do!
The piece was lightly distressed. No need to seal it because this paint is super strong and just plain fantastic.
Lessons learned
I used the same kind of paint on my parcheesi dresser. If you’re interested in trying this paint, read that post as I explain some of the pros and cons of using it.
We’ll keep this piece and use it in the basement but I love the color and plan to use it again for sale items!
I submitted this project to powerofpaint.net and she shared it with her readers. You should check out her blog. She features various painted furniture projects on a regular basis. It’s a great place to get instruction or inspiration!

Hi! I was wondering if you have any tips/tricks for painting the fancy carvings on the front of the piece. I’m about to tackle a similar project and am looking for any advice that will help make it easier! Thanks in advance.

Hi Kim:
Those doors took a while to paint. I used an 1 1/2 sized brush and painted two coats. Patience isn’t one of my strong points but I did get some practice while painting those doors :).
One tip I can remember is that I painted slowly so that I didn’t any unsightly drips. I hope this helps!

Am I another outside blogger, allowed to jump in with a suggestion?
Have you decided the final look you desire? If, for example, you want a barely there washed paint look then you take one approach. if you want a coordinating combo of paint look them that’s the approach you take.
Here’s a jpeg of a vintage dresser I painted where I wanted a washed painted look. This wood is very old and was quite dry. Normally I would have used MMM Hemp Seed Oil to replenish the oils in the wood, but this time I decided to let the wood’s dryness work for me.
So I loaded my brush, wiped it off the can lid and then lightly dry brushed my ornate carvings, legs etc. I wanted the wood underneath to show through so very lightly dry brushed on my paint to achieve that goal. I believe I actually wiped off some of the paint on the legs off with a rag to alter even that look. Wiping off some off the paint with a rag is always an option.

Oh am I ever envious of that piece of furniture. I’ve got to start going on Craigs list. That is incredible you got that piece for free. Oh dear I”m just plain jealous.
Iove the gray as it tones down the fancy wood work on the front. What a great storage piece if nothing else. Just thinking about what you might want to do with it in the future could be so much fun.
