I've been wanting to make an old sign,
to use AS Chalk Paint,
and try a stencil technique.
First, I painted an old board from GW
with AS Chalk Paint - Old White.
Then I went to work on the lettering.
I started with "est. 1969" (our anniversary year)
and printed it out very large, using
Lucinda Handwriting font.
Then I had it enlarged for 50 cents
at Staples.

Next, using a much-talked-about technigue in Blogland,
I scribbled pencil on the back side of the lettering.
Then I flipped it over,
taped it to the painted board,
and traced over the letters, bearing down hard.
I removed the paper,
traced over the letters on the board again with pencil.
Then I painted and filled in the tracing with black paint.
Next I did a rough sand over
of the project to age the sign
a little,
and - voilà!
It might have been better to use a narrower piece of wood -
but, hey, I already had this,
so I just went with it.
I don't have window treatments in the keeping area of the kitchen
and I don't want any.
We have lots of gorgeous trees and woods for a view.
But I like the way the sign fills in the naked area above the window
and gives a focal point.
Thanks to all you bloggers who have shown
us this technique.
It really is easy.
Blessings,
Linda

What a beautiful dining room.
For a first attempt your sign came out great. You're right about the location, too. It looks perfect up there.
