Remembering the Mothers

Our mothers won’t be with us Mother’s Day, but they will be remembered as the table is all about them.

I will start with these pieces, all of which are very special to me.

The placemats were crocheted by my mother-in-law to go with the china (Richelieu by Bavarian) that belonged to my mother.  She collected it piece by piece over a number of years.  She gave it to me some time ago, and I will be passing it on to one of my daughters when I can bear to part with it.

The napkin rings were a gift from Mother.  Once, when we were together, I admired them and she bought them as an early birthday present. As fragile as they are, it’s amazing they have survived so long.

The Fostoria glasses also belonged to Mother.  I remember there being many more, and when I asked her what had happened to them she said she had given most away to one person or another.  Eight water glasses are all I managed to claim!

For as long as I can remember I have collected glass and crystal bells, and both Mother and my mother-in-law added to my collection.  Since this table is set in their honor, the bells have to be included and I’m betting their sweet sound will be heard on Mother’s Day.

Both women loved flowers, and the lilies and alstromeria remind me of each.  Mother was always excited to receive flowers and the more pink the better. The lily’s fragrance reminds me of my mother-in-law’s sweet spirit.  She loved us all so well.

Though neither of these much loved mothers will be with us, as I walked through the dining room tonight I felt their presence and was very happy to have all they left behind.

Enjoy your day with family or with your own special memories.

  8. I love your table. what a beautiful tribute. Those little flower holder napkin rings are so fabulous. I am glad they have lasted. The Fostoria glasses are beautiful. We were arguing over where my mother’s pink ones ended up and my niece ended up with them in her garage! I could be using them. Have a lovely Mother’s Day.

  14. Your table is so special with all those treasures and memories on it. I used crocheted doilies on my table this week as well. Two were made by my dad, and one of them by my MIL. Have a happy mothers day!

  15. What a stunning table, Lulu! I love your plates, so exquisite!..Yourlilies are gorgeous too and I love how you placed them on the table….Christine

  16. I love a table set with sentimental treasures! I can see why you are reluctant to part with that beautiful china. It looks wonderful with the crocheted placemats and the pink flowers. My grandmother had glasses in that pattern, and I so wish I had them — I don’t know what happened to them. Guess I should start my own collection!

  17. Your table definitely reflects the love you have for these women. Really a beautiful setting, Lulu.
One of your daughters is going to treasure the china just as you have. Happy Mother’s Day to you!

  18. Wow, Linda….this table is really, really pretty! I love the way you displayed the flowers down that mirror!!!!! (Gotta love those mirrors!) The fact that you used different shapes of vases makes it look very stylish, too. I really like what you did with the napkin. It gives it a little extra oomph without taking away from the pretty design. Beautiful Fostoria. I hope the other people to whom she gave it have cared for and loved it. The bells are a great finishing touch! I know it has only been a few months since your Mom’s passing, but I hope this Mother’s Day is a good – if not just reflective and quiet – one for you. Take care of yourself, sweet one!

  19. Very elegant and creative way to honors your mothers ~ thanks, namaste, ^_^

  21. What a beautiful tables cape for Mother’s Day! My Mother gave me the same Richlieu pattern as a wedding gift along with Pink Fosteria glasses and I will use them Sunday also! She collected china and crystal and I have already given each of my children a set of hers that I inherited. The Richlieu is my favorite, and I use it every holiday to celebrate her!

I made all this easy by having only one child (daughter) who has an only daughter, so no worries about splitting things up. I have been giving my daughter pieces on her special birthdays (30, 35, 40, 45) so she can start incorporating them into her decor. I’ve also promised some special items to my 8-year-old granddaughter, but I’m not ready to part with my Lalique crystal fish collection just yet.

Such a lovely tribute…I so love the cherished placemats…I have the same Fostoria pattern and they are wonderful…So nice that you have such a pretty heirloom….I am sure your mothers are looking down and enjoying the beautiful table you set for them!!….

    Happy Mother’s Day….

  25. Really lovely table filled with so many pretty pieces and memories!
My mom had 3 surviving daughters, so she made sure she had 3 diamond rings, one for each. I gave the one I inherited to my only child, who inturn used it as an engagement ring for my now dil.
I think you better buy some more china so each child gets a set! 🙂
    Happy Mother’s Day!

    1. Not to worry. After I determined which daughter got this particular china, Mother gave the other daughter another set so that all was equal. Now I need to add pieces so what I have can be divided between two granddaughters.
