Reviews!

To any authors/publishers/ tour companies that are looking for the reviews that I signed up for please know this is very hard to do. I will be stopping reviews temporarily. My husband passed away February 1st and my new normal is a bit scary right now and I am unable to concentrate on a book to do justice to the book and authors. I will still do spotlight posts if you wish it is just the reviews at this time. I apologize for this, but it isn't fair to you if I signed up to do a review and haven't been able to because I can't concentrate on any books. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. I appreciate all of you. Kathleen Kelly April 2nd 2024

Secrets are revealed. Lies are exposed. And in order to have a future, William and Eva will have to delve into the past.

William Templeton, widower and police chief of Eden, North Carolina is working the scene of a local woman’s drowning when the body is found with an old gold coin in her pocket – identical to a coin that was discovered on Catherine’s body, his estranged wife, over a year ago. Catherine’s case, originally deemed a tragic accident, has been reopened, forcing William to step down as police chief.

Historian and Blackbeard expert, Eva Knightly, is brought into the investigation to help identify the coins and can’t understand why her good friend Catherine never mentioned anything about it. When more coins surface at a local church, Eva and William know it’s more than mere coincidence. With the entire town whispering about Blackbeard, cursed coins, and lost treasure, it becomes hard to separate what is true and what is a myth.

The Seafarer’s Secret is a thrilling cinematic mystery featuring the exigent slow-burning romance between William and Eva as they work together to reveal the secrets and lies of Eden, North Carolina. Though, in order to have a future, they’ll have to look deep into the past to keep from being a modern-day killer’s next victim.

Writing allows Carol Ann Collins to combine two of her favorite things, history and romance. Her work is a combination of historical fact, pure fiction, and a vivid imagination.

Though she is an introvert who had no problem staying inside during quarantine, she enjoys traveling with her husband and two adult children. In her spare time, she is an avid book collector and bargain shopper who loves to combine the two.

To date, her favorite find is an 1869 edition of Innocents Abroad by Mark Twain purchased for $10.

Read an Excerpt

It was early afternoon when Emerson finally pushed away from

the table and stood up. He stretched his arms over his head and

groaned. “Ugh. I’m much too old to sit in one place for that long.”

Eva bit her thumbnail and waited.

His expression was unreadable when he spoke. “You recall

the wreckage of the Spanish ship found off the coast of Florida?

It was about five years ago.”

Eva nodded. It had been a huge find for the historical commu-

nity. She’d devoured every paper and article she’d been able to get

her hands on pertaining to the wreckage.

“I was called to help with the identification of the coins found,”

Emerson said. “And there were numerous coins found.”

Eva remembered. She thought there was something else,

though, but couldn’t recall exactly what.

“What was able to be taken from the wreckage site were mostly

common coins of the early eighteenth century. Granted, there

were enough of them to be a small fortune, but it wasn’t those

common coins that the ship was known for. According to Spain,

there was an undisclosed number of rare gold coins on board

as well. They claimed as much in 1715 when the ship first went

down, and they were still claiming it three years ago when it was

reported there were no coins of that nature found in the remains

of the ship.”

That was what she’d forgotten. Spain had gone so far as to say

they didn’t believe the report stating the gold coins were missing.

“At the time, there was a lot of speculation. Had one of the

ship’s crew or passengers taken the gold and abandoned ship? Was

it buried below the wreckage in a spot we weren’t able to reach?”

Emerson’s eyes flashed in excitement. “Or was it possible the coins

weren’t on board when it wrecked?”

“Not on board?” Eva asked. She didn’t see how that was pos-

sible. From what she could tell, it was well known and accepted

that the gold had been on its way back to Spain.

“Not on board,” Emerson repeated. “Because someone else

had them.”

“What?” Eva asked. “Who else would have them?”

Emerson put his finger against his lips as if to hush her. “Stay

with me for a minute. What happens to metal when it’s in the

ocean for a long time?”

“It can become discolored or corroded,” she answered.

“Yes,” he said. “And I’ve been around a lot of coins that have

been in the ocean as well as those that haven’t been.” He pointed

to the coins, still on her workbench. “These have never spent

much time in water, much less salt water. They’ve been on land.”

“Okay,” Eva said slowly because she felt as if she was missing

something very simple.

“I told you all of that because there was one gold coin found

in the wreckage we never disclosed to the press.”

Eva’s mouth fell open.

“The management running the site felt it would be more

believable to say we hadn’t found any of the gold coins as opposed

to saying we only found one.” Emerson shrugged. “I didn’t agree,

but I was overruled. After thinking about it later, I realized what

might have happened to the rest of them.”

“What?” she asked.

“My guess is the coins weren’t on board when the Spanish ship

met its end. Maybe because a pirate had attacked the ship before

then and stole them. Maybe most of them.” He nodded toward

the workbench.

“Blackbeard was thought to be around that part of Florida in

1717,” Eva said. “What are the odds that two years later, he found

the coins there?”

“It’s certainly possible,” Emerson replied. “Where did the two

coins you have come from? You didn’t tell me.”

“The pastor at the local Methodist church says someone put

them in the collection plate.”

“That’s the craziest thing I’ve heard of.” Emerson’s forehead

wrinkled. “I need to call the police department. Is it okay if a

few of them come by here? I’d rather not transport the coins

unnecessarily.”

Eva nodded, unable to shake the feeling that the crazy had

only just started.

Ashes on the Wind by Brandy Purdy New Release!

Ashes on the Wind

The Love Story Behind The Crime of the Century

This crime happened 100 years ago in 1924. There are many books about the crime. Brandy Purdy gets a bit more intimate about what the Leopold and Loeb crime was about and why would two young wealthy men with the world at their feet commit such a crime. With impeccable research, Brandy tells the intimate story of Leopold and Loeb on a different level than other people have done. A very important fiction book written by an author who takes her time to tell a story. She has 9 other historical fiction books of which 2 others are highlighted here.

What is the book about?

"Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb were the defendants in the infamous Leopold and Loeb case. They were wealthy and highly intelligent students who committed a heinous crime in 1924. The duo kidnapped and murdered a 14-year-old boy named Bobby Franks in Chicago, believing they could commit the perfect crime.

Their motive was to demonstrate their intellectual superiority by committing a flawless act of violence. However, their arrogance led to their eventual capture and trial.

Clarence Darrow, a renowned defense attorney, represented them during the trial, which became a significant legal spectacle. Ultimately, Leopold and Loeb were sentenced to life imprisonment for their crime. Their case raised questions about criminal responsibility, punishment, and rehabilitation."

What motivated them?

"Leopold and Loeb’s motive for the crime was rooted in their misguided belief in their own intellectual superiority. They sought to prove their brilliance by committing a “perfect” murder. Unfortunately, their arrogance led to their capture and a significant legal trial"

Ashes on the Wind

(Leopold and Loeb 1924)

As he packed up his medical bag Dr. Frankenthal shook his head glumly and muttered "You'd both be better off if you said goodbye right now."
Naturally, I ignored him. He didn't understand us, nobody did. It was all so much drunken drama, but in the cold light of morning and sobriety the fire always burned out. It was like our love endured a nightly cremation and then at dawn we watched it rise anew, reborn, a phoenix from the ashes. It truly was a beautiful thing!

The Secrets of Lizzie Borden by Brandy Purdy

(Lizzie Borden 1892)

"Was it worth it? Another scandal-ridden and society-shunned scoundrel, Oscar Wilde, said it best I think: "The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple." For me, yes and no are twins conjoined, most inconveniently, but perpetually; one cannot exist without the other. I can only tell you this, for whatever it is worth to you, all those old adages about money embroidered on so many samplers are absolutely true; it cannot buy happiness and it is the root of all evil."

Lizzie Andrew Borden (July 19, 1860 – June 1, 1927) was an American woman who was tried and acquitted of the August 4, 1892, axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. No one else was charged in the murders, and, despite ostracism from other residents, Borden spent the remainder of her life in Fall River. She died of pneumonia at the age of 66, just days before the death of her older sister, Emma.

The Borden murders and trial received widespread publicity throughout the United States and, along with Borden herself, they remain a topic in American popular culture to the present day. They have been depicted in numerous films, theatrical productions, literary works, and folk rhymes that are still very well-known in the Fall River area.

The Ripper's Wife Brandy Purdy
(Jack the Ripper 1888)

"My life had turned out to be a fairy tale after all, only not one of the pretty, happily ever after stories, but the most sinister one of all--I was Bluebeard's bride, Jack the Ripper's wife. And amongst the many secrets my husband was harboring was a cachet of murdered, butchered, women, like the dead wives in Bluebeard's secret chamber. When I had opened the cover of that diary I had peeked into that secret room..."

Jack the Ripper was an unidentified serial killer active in and around the impoverished Whitechapel district of London, England, in 1888. In both criminal case files and the contemporaneous journalistic accounts, the killer was also called the Whitechapel Murderer and Leather Apron

It begins as a fairytale romance-a shipboard meeting in 1880 between vivacious Southern belle Florence Chandler and handsome English cotton broker James Maybrick. Courtship and a lavish wedding soon follow, and the couple settles into an affluent Liverpool suburb.

From the first, their marriage is doomed by lies. Florie, hardly the heiress her scheming mother portrayed, is treated as an outsider by fashionable English society. James's secrets are infinitely darker-he has a mistress, an arsenic addiction, and a vicious temper. But Florie has no inkling of her husband's depravity until she discovers his diary-and in it, a litany of bloody deeds...

The Rippers Wife by Brandy Purdy reimagines a story, true or not, that is for the reader to decide. Ms. Purdy takes the reader into the affluent Liverpool suburb. They meet, fall in love, then Florie finds out what a person that James is, after the discovery of the diary she is forced to come to terms that her husband may not be who she thinks she is. Another of Ms. Purdy's tales that is deeply researched and put into this very readable novel.

A Secret Match (A Gay Wrestling Romance) By Kelli A. Wilkins Book Spotlight!

Behind the Scenes: A Secret Match (A Gay Wrestling Romance)

By Kelli A. Wilkins

www.KelliWilkins.com

This “Behind the Scenes” blog is part of a series examining my romance novels. In each blog, I’ll talk about why I wrote the book, share my thoughts on the plot and/or characters, and reveal what I loved most (or least) about writing the book. Warning: Blogs may contain spoilers.

If you missed any blog in this series, you can catch up here: https://www.kelliwilkins.com/blog

A Secret Match is a contemporary gay romance set in the world of professional wrestling. It’s a follow-up book (of sorts) to my M/F wrestling romance, A Deceptive Match.

Technically, the book isn’t a sequel because it’s a gay romance and falls into a different romance genre… But it’s closely connected because it focuses on Everett Kinkade, a secondary character I introduced in A Deceptive Match.

In that book Ev is the best friend of wrestling champ Vinnie Valentine. They’ve been together for years as tag-team champs, confidantes, and are as close as brothers. I fell in love with Ev so much while writing A Deceptive Match I knew he needed his own book. And I knew it wouldn’t be an easy one.

Ev is a gay professional wrestler who has lots of insecurities and personal issues to overcome. Although he’s been in a long-term relationship with his boyfriend, Josh, he’s kept their involvement a secret. Aside from Josh nobody except Vinnie (and Danni, the heroine from A Deceptive Match) know he’s gay. He has a hard enough time dealing with his sexuality on a personal level, and on a professional level—forget it.

So naturally I put the screws to Ev—right in the first scene. When the book opens, Josh and Ev are having “going away” sex, and all seems well—until they have a major argument. Josh is tired of being hidden away like a “dirty secret” and wants Ev to come out or at least acknowledge their relationship to someone in their life.

Ev refuses for several reasons. His wrestling persona is a heartthrob who women fantasize about, and he needs to maintain his image if he wants to keep his job. Obviously, coming out would threaten his livelihood. (This book was written before it was “acceptable” for wrestlers to come out.) He’s also afraid of what people will think about him if they know he’s gay. After a heated exchange, Josh gives him an ultimatum and walks out.

Ev is distraught and turns to his best friend and fellow wrestler, Vinnie for advice. Danni and Vinnie play a crucial role in Ev’s story—both in his personal journey—and in the ring.

The head of the wrestling organization, Nick August, tells Ev he has to go along with a “steal my woman” angle involving Vinnie and Danni. As part of the storyline, Ev has to kiss Danni in front of a live audience. This is the turning point in the book. Ev is torn between living a lie and being true to himself—and in the spur of the moment, he comes out on live TV.

From there, all hell breaks loose.

Ev instantly regrets what he’s done and is afraid he’s just tanked his career, some of the other wrestlers aren’t thrilled with the news, and Nick August is beyond furious. But in true wrestling fashion, the fans think it’s all a work—until Ev comes out again. This time, he’s out and proud.

When I wrote the book I knew Ev and Josh would be apart for about a third of the story, but I wanted to give readers a peek into their lives before the break-up. I decided the best way to do that was through flashbacks. Over the course of the book readers learn how Ev and Josh met, see their first kiss, and more. When Josh and Ev reconnect, readers know all about them and realize they’re meant to be together.

I love Ev as a character. On one hand, he’s funny, sharp-witted, sexy, and a wiseass. And on the other hand, he’s an emotionally fragile, wounded warrior who is torn between living two lives.

A Secret Match has everything a good wrestling storyline needs: action, heroes, heels, drama, humor, sexy wrestlers—and in this case, some pretty hot love scenes. It takes readers (and the characters) on an emotional roller coaster ride. And it’s not just for wrestling fans. The wrestling world is merely a backdrop for a tender romance and a look inside Ev’s mind.

A Secret Match isn’t a sequel to A Deceptive Match per se, but it takes place in the same world of pro wrestling and many of the characters from A Deceptive Match appear in A Secret Match. You don’t have to read the books together or in any particular order, and each book stands alone as an individual read.

I hope you’ll check it out. If you love wrestling, if you love romance, and if you loved A Deceptive Match, you’ll love this book too. Here’s the book summary and links:

A SECRET MATCH

Everett Kinkade is a world-famous professional wrestler and the sexy heartthrob of millions of adoring female fans. But Ev has a secret he doesn’t dare share with anyone. He’s gay.

After years of being Ev’s secret lover, Josh is tired of hiding in the shadows and wants Ev to openly acknowledge their relationship. Coming out is the last thing Ev wants and fears it will ruin his career.

One night in a moment of truth, Everett outs himself on live TV. There’s no going back, and his announcement sparks a firestorm of problems—both personally and professionally. He’s forced to come to grips with who he really is while facing down a manipulative boss and a tag-team out to destroy him.

Torn between living a lie and losing the man he loves, Ev has risked everything… can he find a balance between his career and his heart?
