yardstick embellished shelves
By way of confession, my crafting room is not exactly tidy. I have a bad habit of keeping supplies on my desk rather than storing them in a drawer or in the closet.
Most of the solution was already at my fingertips — I had five finished shelves salvaged from a discarded CD cabinet. Ready to hang.
Still…I waited.
Then one day, a friend appeared as if by magic bearing a gift: two vintage yardsticks from her personal collection. The puzzle pieces neatly clicked into place.
I scoured the town to find a few extra (new) yardsticks from hardware/lumber purveyors. Not as easy a task as I’d first imagined.
Seems that old fashioned wooden yardsticks are not as common as they were years ago.
But I happily have enough to tackle the task at hand: adding functional storage to my crafting room embellished with nostalgically pretty yardsticks.
I selected heavy corner braces for the shelf brackets, because of their industrial look.
Cut the yardsticks to size with a small hand saw and glued them to the front shelf edges.
Then I removed (most) of the clutter from my desk surface. I absolutely love them!
Two more will hang on the adjacent wall along with a pinboard…but I still need a tiny dose of extra inspiration for that.
Thank you to my lovely friend for the yardsticks, they are absolute treasures!
I’m so grateful you stopped by today 🙂

Oh they’re just too dang cute! Seriously so!
AND you were smart enough to put them on in a way that made a lip on the shelf so you don’t have to fret about stuff rolling from the darn shelf…..cuz you’re that darn good! 😉
Mel took the words right outta my mouth…..”Oh, they’re just so dang cute! Seriously so!”
And I was also going to mention about the yards sticks giving the shelves a lip, as not to have things fall off.
Diane, honestly, these are beyond wonderful. Clever and oh so practical!
And paaaaaaleeeese…..your craft room looks immaculate. In fact, your whole house does.
Btw, I love the desk!
Hope you had a faaaaaaaabulous day, dear friend.
X to you and Cristybella!
Wow!! That is a fabulous idea, Diane! I love the new shelves, love the desk, love it all!! 🙂

perfect looking shelves for a craft area.
Well, you know I LOVE that! Very cool, Diane!
Cute!
I really like that look! Gotta go find me some yardsticks now!
Your shelves look fabulous.
Yardsticks are hard to find- I have one that I snatched from the math dept. when I was still teaching (as an Eng. teacher!).
Have a great week,

LOVE this! I agree, wooden yardsticks are hard to find these days and they’re not free anymore. I used them to make ledges on a shelf in my classroom to hold my baskets of paints in place. They give my space, and yours, a nice zing!
I LOVE this!! I looked into getting some vintage metre sticks i a while ago…but they’re SOOOO expensive in the UK.
Grrrr!
Very cute. Thanks for linking up to Share the Love Wednesday!

Really cute! Great idea!
Hi Diane,
Your DIY is absolutely stunning.
I have same as your DIY in the garage. I will post that next week. I really love doing it §;-)
I didn’t realized that this is very popular in decolandia. Me & hubby built his shelves in his garage a year ago with old yardstick. He was an old interior carpenter. But shifted his branch to financial branch.
TY for sharing this. Hubby give me a wink…
Happy Tuesday,
