Cherry Red Toy Chest

Finally the toy box I have been making is done!!! I have never made a whole box bench before out of scrap materials.  It was not easy, and I wanted to throw it away a few times, and it even got left in the rain.  But I continued on and I really love it now.  Since I don't have room for it in my home, I hope someone who loves it will see it at Tookiloo Consignment (where I am taking it to be sold), and love it!  Here is the process:

It started out as just a head board and a foot board.

Then I cut the foot board in half and attached each side to the headboard with my jr. Kreg jig joining system.

After a lot of work, I built the whole box around it, including the lid. Each piece of wood was cut to fit.

Finally I was ready to prime.  With all the mis-matched wood, it looked pretty ugly.  This is my favorite part!

Since I had some red in my garage, and the frame itself is pretty heavy and more masculine, I went with red.

It took multiple coats of paint to get it a nice even color.

I decided to add black glaze to give it some texture and darkness.

Last night I had this idea to put frames on the front, and make them with plexy glass, and an opening at the top to allow for anyone to put thier child's picture.  At first, I painted and kept the frames bright, but then I decided it didn't flow.

So I painted over the bright colors with black paint to show just a little bit.  The coloring and texture go together better and it flows.

And of coarse the toys must go inside.  It is very deep to throw in the whole kids room of toys.

I love it and I am very happy with the way it turned out.
