cute-as-a-button looped tassels
Last week’s paper tassels with the button embellishment sent me into a tassel making frenzy. I experimented with a variety of paper and am still enamored with these adorable little frou-frous.
Next I decided to try something new. This darling looped button tassel.
I originally saw it while reading Robynne’s Nest where she featured a tassel she purchased at a lovely shop called the Cloth House in London. So, in the spirit of full disclosure, this is a d-i-y version of their product. It’s just so adorable I couldn’t resist. If you’d like to make one, here are some easy instructions.
Start with a spool of cotton string, hemp string or anything narrow enough to fit through a button hole. Thread 15 buttons onto your string, reinforcing the end with a piece of cellophane tape if needed.
Wrap the string around a greeting card and place a button at the bottom of each loop.
After the 15th full wrap, cut the string and secure the top end of the loops with a binder clip.
Cut another length of string about 15 inches long and fold it in half. Tie a simple overhand knot at the halfway point then thread the string ends through a 2-hole button. Slide the button up to the knot. This is going to be the top of our tassel.
Remove the binder clip from the card and slip one of the string ends of the top piece through the tassel loops and make a single knot. Adjust the top piece so the button is squarely on top of the loops and tie another knot beneath them to secure. Now cut another piece of string about 10 inches long to bind the tassel.
Slide the tassel off the card. Smooth the strings beneath the top button and begin wrapping the binder string about 3/8″ below the button. Make several wraps and tie the two ends of the binding string to secure. Now trim the loose string ends near this binding knot.
And you’re finished! You’ve got a cute-as-a-button looped tassel.
{As a tip, to add stiffness to your cotton string, first soak briefly in a shallow dish of white glue diluted with water and let dry. Works like a charm!}
