English Countryside: A Tablescape

Please join me on a walk through the countryside of England...

Through verdant pastures...

Dotted with sheep...

Why, there's one around every turn!

And there are fragrant bowers of roses...

Amidst pagoda-shaped garden follies...

And garden urns in a state of pleasing decay...

I took a cue from the name of Mikasa's pattern, English Countryside...

And built this tablescape from there...

With things I had on hand...

Mixing high and low...

Like Gorham crystal (I invited the bon ton... King Edward and Lady Anne), Gorham silver bread plates, and little Herend critters on leaves...

Mixed with salt and pepper artichokes found at the hardware store...

Chantilly flatware mixed with grassy green place mats from WalMart...

Antique napkin rings and heirloom linens...

Mixed with refugee lambs...

Strays from some long-lost nativity sets...

And everything centered around a few dollars worth of grocery store roses from Publix...

With some alstroemeria lilies thrown in for color and good measure...

Now, you know how I love to play with my dishes, and I did that with these dinner plates in English Countryside, which I enjoy because they can be dressed up...

Or dressed down as they were when I used them in a very casual tablescape with a patchwork quilt and fuzzy ducks for spring HERE...

And another for St. Patrick's Day found HERE ...

While in the next few shots, I brought in four slightly different salad plates in the very dressy Duke of Gloucester pattern by Mottahedeh...

And enjoyed seeing just how these salad plates looked against the "texture" on the Mikasa dinner plates...

I thought the Duke was the perfect plate to introduce in this pastoral English theme...

With all of that fruit and even an insect or two...

I also think he looks rather handsome with the artichokes, don't you?

But Mikasa has several different salad/accent plates that go with their English Countryside pattern, and I selected the peach...

And the pear for this table...

And I threw in an extra pear next to the floral arrangement just because! ;-)

Now, that we've set the table, I'd like to serve what I think is the perfect recipe for dessert, a poem by Keats...

To A Friend Who Sent Me Some Roses

As late I rambled in the happy fields,

What time the sky-lark shakes the tremulous dew

From his lush clover covert;—when anew

Adventurous knights take up their dinted shields:

I saw the sweetest flower wild nature yields,

A fresh-blown musk-rose;

'twas the first that threw its sweets upon the summer:

Graceful it grew

As is the wand that Queen Titania wields.

And, as I feasted on its fragrancy,

I thought the garden-rose it far excell’d:

But when, O Wells! thy roses came to me,

My sense with their deliciousness spell’d:

Soft voices had they, that with tender plea

Whisper’d of peace, and truth, and friendliness unquell’d.. -- John Keats

Thank you so much for visiting me today, and I also want to thank those of you who have kept us in your prayers this summer. You will never know how much it was appreciated and how much you are loved. These roses, arranged in the spring, are my gift to you.

Now, let's go join Susan the lovely hostess of Tablescape Thursday and all of her friends HERE to see more tablescapes this week. I look forward to visiting you as well!

Warmly,

Mrs. Magpie (Sheila)

Well if this isn't the best post...I just finished reading Northanger Abbey by Jane Austin...so the English Countryside theme couldn't be more perfect! Love the artichokes and the little lamb...but I really am loving those vintage napkin holders...perfect - I'm imagining the Tilney family entertaining Miss Morland at their home right now :) Hope all is well with you and Mr. M! So good to hear from you!!

Spectacular tablescape! It even coordinates with your home! (The floral centerpiece and your drapes, and the green placemats and your carpet! It's like walking into an elegant restaurant!)
I loved it all and of course you did another outstanding scape, and I loved both the substantial salad plates from your pattern as well as the more delicate ones mixed in. And my most favorite (other than the beautiful centerpiece) is the lambs! How sweet to salvage them from old Nativity sets! They remind me of the ones I have from my grandmother's Nativity set (from Germany). 'Love it all, really! AND LOVE SEEING A POST FROM YOU!
I think of you often and hope you are doing well.
Love and Prayers,
Eileen

I must confess, though, that Bear is a bit clumsy for that sort of tableware. I'd probably break a lot if I came for a formal tea.
But it all looks so lovely!

Well, Sheila, dear friend of mine, you had me at the first glimpse of those wonderful flowers. Your centerpiece seems to have sprung from a masterful Dutch painting -- lush and exuberant, tasteful and elegant!

But then I scrolled down and was captivated by the entire table, the whimsy, the mixture of 'high and low,' the poetry, the inspiration of it all.

I've missed your table posts. What a triumphant return -- stunning!

Hello Sheila, Thank you for your visit today. I have not been visiting much and I am sorry to lose touch with you. I want to visit more but life seems to get in the way. I know you understand how that can be a problem. We just arrived home from Raleigh on Sunday night. Well actually Fl. after Raleigh which was in total a 10 day trip. Five children spread all over the place keeps us so busy. Bill stopped teaching this semester and that gives us more time to run the roads. That is good and bad. Smile

I pray this note finds you and your hubby feeling well and getting back to normal after the year you have had so far.

I do miss you and love you my dear friend. I am looking forward to more time this winter for visiting. It is quieter in the winter in the mountains. More of a slower pace.

Dear Sheila
How are you..Oliver and I both send warm wishes and hugs to you and your family. I haven't been on blogging too much these days as I wasn't feeling too great but am getting better. I have thought of Mr. Magpie and hope is well!
Your post is stunning, really a perfect interpretation and creative inspiration of the English Countryside. Your flowers are gorgeous as are the dishes.
Have a glorious day
xoxo

This is one of the most beautiful posts and tablescapes I have ever seen.

Each and every component is exquisite. You have arranged them perfectly.
