Frenchy Bedroom on a Budget

I had a lot of fun at my sister's house recently doing some decorating. Let me clarify - a couple of times a year she asks me to come over and de-clutter, simplify, and "have at it". It is so much fun!

It's a lot easier to do that to someone else's house because you are not emotionally attached to their stuff. You know..."My friend gave me that, my son gave me this, my brother's cousin once removed gave me that" - yeah - when? 25 years ago? Retire it!

Anyway, we just "shopped the house" and had a blast (along with a delicious lunch prepared by Sis!).

Unfortunately, I forgot my camera for "before" pics, but here are some "after" pics:

(BTW, a friend gave her that dresser, which Sis painted black - great idea!)

The sun was blasting in this room, sorry for the bad lighting. See her baby dress in a shadow box? Also, she had a pair of silver candlesticks from our mom. Sis thought she'd just put them in the basement...not her style. No way! How about the unexpected candlesticks on top of the stepping stool! I LOVE it! Am I quirky crazy?

She had these sunflowers that we put on some books (standard decorating items) and sat in a tray. She is going to cover the tray bottom with harlequin scrapbook paper to hide the country red apples!

The bed is from our precious grandmother. Our mom gave me money for Sis's birthday and I found the pics at Ross and the iron scroll at HobLob. We made some pillows. The night stand is from Sis's childhood....I suggested she paint it, but it doesn't bother me as is. What do you think? Black, cream??????

The walls are a khaki green from Home Depot, and the matelasse is also that color. The sun washes out my photo color. (Pat at Back Porch Musings would know exactly what to do in that situation....Pat, help!)

The valances (which almost didn't make the picture!) are short, white, with tabs on a black iron rod from Penney's - inexpensive and perfect for the room!

Hope you enjoyed Sis's guest room. What fun we had. I have more pics of her kitchen (rooster heaven) and family room (de-cluttered!) for next time.

I'm joining the following parties:
Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Met Monday
Rhoda at Southern Hospitality for Today's Thrifty Treasures
Marty at A Stroll Thru Life for Tabletop Tuesday
Linda at Coastal Charm for Nifty Thrifty Tuesday
Hope you stop by their sites, and have a wonderful week. Blessings to you! Linda

For the nightstand I would paint it a creme to go with the background of the pictures you bought above the bed!

I like the candleholder on the step stool...cute and unusual.

I love what y'all did to the room. I think you could go either way on the nightstand. Love the baby dress in the shadow box.

This sounds like fun, Linda!

The room is beautiful! And so are your photos. If you want to darken them a bit, Photoscape has a tool for darkening. Picasa has a place with a slide, to add shadows, either would help, in editing. Your pics look great, as they are, on my laptop.

Black or cream, for the nightstand, would be very pretty.

Thanks so much for the mention!:-)

You are so right, it is so much easier to edit someone else's home! I love this room, the toile coverlet on the matellase is gorgeous. And the shadow boxed baby dress is my favorite. Of course, being married to a picture framer, I may be a bit biased lol. Kat

You said it! It is easier to declutter someone else's stuff because you're not emotionally attached to it. Great job!

Cute bedroom makeover for Sis! I love the candlestick...I have a pair similar to hers. I was cleaning mine and found out they unscrew in two parts to make three different sized candlesticks. Who knew?

I think it's so much easier to style someone else's home. You get to see things with a much more open mind. You did a great job helping your sister. I like the little touches- the candlestick on the stool, the scroll above the framed pictures, the cool wire bird on the dresser. I would recommend that the nightstand be painted black to tie it back in with the dresser. You did a really nice job shopping the house, Linda. The room looks great.

I love what you did with the room! Why not do a black/cream combo. Paint the frame a cream color, and then paint the drawers black or vice versa. I think it would look divine in the room. Congrats on a successful project!

That must have been fun! Her bedroom is just beautiful! Just my style! Love the scrolly thing over the bed and the prints! I think the nightstand painted black & some new hardware would be pretty. You could even decopauge some toile fabric or paper on the face of the drawers and keep the rest black and maybe distress the edges some.

Nina, do you know of a place like the Classy Flea in Decatur? One that has different vendors?

The room turned out beautifully! The candelabra on the step stool is creative genius! I want to paint a piece of furniture black, and can't decide what piece to paint. Her dresser looks great.

I enjoyed your cute little French story too. laurie
