Starting from the Same Place Collaboration

Good Morning Creatives!

Today, I am excited to share with you something a little different.

You might remember back in May, I did a fun project called The Eye Glass Collaboration where a group of artists and I each took a pair of eyeglasses and interpreted them in our own way.

I am pleased to be doing another collaboration…this time with almost 60 artists!

How this collaboration works

We chose to name this collaboration “Starting from the Same Place Collaboration.”

Each of us were sent a package featuring the same materials and were allowed to just let our creativity take us wherever.

Each of our kids included:

Beacon Fabri-Tac

Vintage Muslim and Upholstery Fabric

Circuit Components

Chipboard Gears

A word tag

Embellishments made from Amazing Casting

Stencil Girl Stencil

Vintage Viewmaster Slide

Clear Gems

Baker’s Twine

What I came up with

Starting from the same place collaboration

I love the way this turned out! I feel like I stayed true to myself with the bright colors and layering, but pushed myself outside of my normal self.

It was my goal to be as exclusive to the kit as possible.

Outside of the kit, I used:

a variety of DecoArt and DecoArt Media Acrylic Paints and Misters

Stencil by Stencil Girl

White Chevron Washi Tape (WeR Memory Keepers)

Red Glitter Letters (American Crafts)

Hand-carved Brick Stamp

One-Step Crackle (DecoArt)

How to

Since it was technically part of my “kit”, I used my envelope as my substrate!

Since it was technically "part of the kit" I used my envelope as my substrate.

While it was drying, I moved on to painting my vintage muslim. I used the stencil from my kit and DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Carbon Black.

Using a stencil brush and DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Carbon Black, I stencil my design on to my vintage muslim material.

My DecoArt Media Misters added a great POP of color to my blah chipboard gears. They also added just a touch of shimmer.

DecoArt Media Misters gave my chipboard gears a POP of color and a little shimmer.

To add texture, I added a small amount of DecoArt’s One Step Crackle and then hit it with my head gun. This caused it to bubble up and add texture and interest to my gears.

Once my green was dry, I had fun with paint and misters just adding layers to my background.

Wanting a frayed/distressed edge, I cut a small slice into my muslim and then ribbed around my image. I adhered it down with my Beacon Fabri-Tac.

DecoArt Media Fluid Acrylic in Titanium White used with my uncleaned Stencil added a great variety to my background. Some places are purple, some lavender and some white.

No…those aren’t caterpillars that came to do art with me! LOL We had some vintage upholstery fabric in our kits that I ripped (NOT an easy task…let me tell you!) into little strips. I didn’t want them to be a huge focus, so I layered them on the bottom to get give my layers height and a little texture.

Think outside the paint bottle

This is gonna get a little weird, but stay with me.

When I’m painting, I use this paper called “palette paper.” It has a slick surface so that you can move your paint around without it soaking into your palette. Way better than using a paper plate and easier clean up than using a reusable plate.

Recently I realized that once the paint is dry, you can peel it right up from the paper!

You end up with these great, irregular paint bits and blobs that I thought would be a great addition to this project that is all about “found objects.”

Beacon’s Fabri-Tac worked just as well on my “paint blobs” as it did on my fabric!

Finishing Touches

To finish it up, it was all about just having fun layering everything and adding more splashes of color!

Final Thoughts

I hope you enjoyed my project today and you are inspired to look at the world around you with an artistic eye. This experience definitely changed the way I look at things. Circuits, upholstery and used paint blobs aren’t my usual “go to” mediums, but I found that I really liked how they added interest and texture and just something new to my project.
