How We Explore Maine’s Islands

Here’s a bit of trivia for you.  There are roughly 3,000 islands off the coast of Maine.  If you connected them all and included the coastline, Maine would stretch all the way to Key West.  There was a time when about 300 of the islands were inhabited, but as times changed and boats became faster people moved to the mainland where life was easier.  Now, only about 15 of Maine’s islands can claim a permanent population.

If you are going to explore the islands, a boat is a must.  For many years we were sailors, and while we still love the idea of sailing, once we decided we wanted to explore as much of Maine’s waters as possible we became stink potters, a term describing power boaters.  Initially, the sound of engines was troublesome, but once I realized how quickly we could move from place to place the noise became less of an irritant.

Our boat is called Pipe Dreams, which aptly describes the years we dreamed of spending more time in a place we had fallen in love with.  She is a powerful craft, and we have not only cruised the Maine coast but have taken her to Boston and New York and up the Hudson River to Burlington, Vermont.  She’s also been south to the Chesapeake, another boater’s playground.

We’ve had many a picnic aboard.  Lobster rolls are always a favorite.

Munchies are good for an afternoon cruise

and when there’s an overnight trip there’s no problem making a yummy dinner

or breakfast to be enjoyed aboard.

On our island explorations,  the tablescapes are not ones that would make Martha Stewart proud,  but that doesn’t take away from the taste of what is served.  In fact, there’s something kind of nice about living simple on board and enjoying the experience.

  4. VERy obvious that you are a true boat lover in that you refer to the boats as “she” instead of “it.” Love that! That is so cool that you guys are able to take her out and explore from time to time. That last photo, by the way…..VERY Ralph Lauren! 🙂 Have a great weekend!!!

  5. LOVE LOVE LOVE that flag and wine photo… I’m inspired to PAINT it… wish I could be in Maine NOW eating lobster!!!!

  6. I spent my childhood on a motor boat. Now my children are sailing. Both are wonderful.

  7. All that delicious food AND being on a boat to enjoy it. Sounds like bliss! The name of your boat is just perfect!

  8. Oh you know I love this! What a beautiful & perfectly named vessel! I did not know there were that many islands off Maine’s coast… I’d love to visit there some day. I love your last photo with the flag flying in the background~ everything tastes better on the water 🙂

  9. Oh, those lobster rolls! Do you have a recipe for them? I adore them but have never made them myself. Your tablescape is gorgeous. What fun and I am a stink potter myself. I am now addicted to the stink of the gas and oil smell because it reminds me of fun. I never knew there were so many islands. This should definitely make it on my bucket list. I didn’t know about some of these parties either. Thanks for the visual stimulation!

  10. Gorgeous photos! I recently went on my very first sailing trip and LOVED it 🙂

The simple things, like wine & snack foods and a gorgeous sunset were much enjoyed!

Thanks for sharing the info about Maine – I’ve never been to the east coast… but it looks lovely and hopefully I will get to visit there someday!

  11. its all about location, location, LOCATION!

  12. Beautiful pictures that capture the area so well. I would love to visit Maine but will have to do it vicariously through your experiences.
I enjoyed learning about the myriad of islands there, something I did not know. Your boat is beautiful and I can image the pleasure it is exploring and enjoying family and friends on each adventure.

  13. What a wonderful hobby! My husband and I would love to investigate those island off of Maine, as this is one of our favorite places to visit. (He has a great-grandfather that was born in Limerick, and there are still a lot of “Days” living there.)

    =)

    1. I know some Days in Rockport.

  14. I am reminded of a sailboat ride and an accompanying dinner that we purchased at the W.U. Elementary auction years ago. Only I could get seasick on a lake and ruin a beautiful evening and wonderful dinner! It was fun anyway and makes a better memory because it was so funny…..for everyone else.

  15. Hmmm…interesting idea: a power boat. All this time I’ve thought a sailboat would be my vessel for island-exploration. Now you’ve gone and planted a different seed! What to do, what to do…

    1. If you have lots of time, sailing is great!,,

  16. Hi! I came back to answer your question. I am storing the dishes in the garage because I don’t use them that often and I am running out of storage space inside the house. I have way too many dishes, at least 65 sets. Anyway, I have a walk in closet in the garage with shelves and I have the dishes in clear boxes so I can easily get them when I need them. Thanks for stopping by…Christine

  17. This looks like so much fun. What a beautiful tablescape!..Christine
