Silver and Old Books

I've stumbled across some useful silver and interesting old books.
Recently at GW I saw this large handled silver tray.
I really like it to "anchor" my books.
I also got these old "Alice in Wonderland" books from GW.
The book "Old Touraine" was an interesting find
because I spent 2 weeks in that area of France studying French and touring many of the "châteaux" mentioned in this 100 year old book!

My old wind-up clock is also a flea market find.
Love it - no batteries!
Another little GW silver tray....

  Don't you love those feet?!
Most of you would probably pass by these old books.
They are kind of ratty looking!
I got them  at an estate sale for the "insides" -
                                                    (3) 100+ year old books (for a few dollars) -
a French book printed in America, a French book for learning English - printed in France, and an old McGuffey speller.  They are fascinating.

This is a beautifully illustrated 1892 book on learning German (I am partial to French, but I am not exclusive!). More pretty handwriting (I can't help myself!).
This fabulous book from 1878 is a reader.  For $1.50, it is full of excellent writings - especially writings
about character and classic literature.  It came from a school  Maybe in the 5th  grade?  If so, it  is impressive.  Not sure what kids are reading in school these days, but this reader is amazing!
I just love this handwriting.  In fact, I did a post on old French handwriting here (scroll past the tarts : ).  I am sad that it seems to be disappearing from schools.  If you are a teacher, don't fuss at me because I am one, too.  However,  I believe we need handwriting.  An estate sale professional told me that ALL things handwritten are becoming valuable - due to the use of computers, e-cards, etc.  Save your letters, handwritten notes, etc.!!! (p.s.  Teach cursive to your kids and grandies!)
This geography book is so interesting!  It is dated 1898.  At the time, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona,
Hawaii and Alaska were not states.  So interesting!

 Save your old books!
Keep your silver!
And WRITE someone a note  :  )
Blessings,
Linda

Love this post. I have a passion for old books too. I love the smell of them, as strange as that sounds. LOL I also love old handwriting. I have practiced the art of calligraphy for years. In fact, I use a calligraphy pen to address my greeting cards. You found some very pretty finds. Thanks for sharing.

Love the silver, so pretty and using it for a soap dish is fabulous. I need to remember that. Your books are fantastic. I am constantly on the look out for old books. They seem to be so hard to find. Great post. Hugs, Marty

I love all the books you got, Linda! Covers and all! I'll have to take a picture one day of a little French book I bought off ebay some time ago {almost 10 years}. It has a beautiful aged cover with writing inside from the student who must have used it. It is a French grammar book and I'd have to look at the date of the actual book, but tucked inside are notes from the woman who owned it dating from the early 1960's. I think you'd like it.

Oh, found out I did use the right printer, but still not sure why my ink changed color on that transfer.

I love old books- their covers and their content can add so much to a vignette. And your silver pieces- love to use trays throughout the house, too. They make the most mundane things look classy. :-) Sue

I have those same Alice in Wonderland books. They belonged to my mother. They originally came in a cardboard sleeve, that wore out long ago. Thank you for the post.

LOVE and ADORE the old books! Especially the French and German ones -- I can NEVER pass by these types of books -- they are real treasures. I also enjoy seeing the lovely handwriting in the covers from 'way back when' -- a time when penmanship was still taught in school. Just lovely -- thanks for sharing!

We are complete fools about books. My husband just bought two old ones about Abe Lincoln at an estate sale and one is inscribed " To my darling wife 1947" in the most beautiful hand writing. I love your trays and I have similar thrifted ones in my house. I especially adore footed ones. ♥Olive
