Henry Kane – Homicide at Yuletide (1951)

Homicide at Yuletide

Vintage Golden Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: Christmas Tree\Decoration
Date Finished: April 16, 2016

Peter Chambers is hired by a female private eye to take care of some work when she has been arrested for drunk driving and other assorted traffic offenses. That work takes him to an apartment where he finds a dead man and a young woman holding a gun. The dead man had three wives, a daughter (the aforementioned young woman), and a mobster after him for some jewels he stole. The women, former models, all throw themselves at Pete, of course, but he mostly resists. The Christmas setting mostly means snow and cold and lots of drinking parties. Those happen to Pete at anytime of the year, though. He somewhat surprisingly does go to church with one character in an offhand mention. The mystery isn’t too difficult to figure out with the clocks and the alibi bit, but the main thing here is the nutty dialogue. I’ve been listening to some Crime and Peter Chambers OTR so I can almost here Dane Clark reading these lines.
