A study of two characters, a girl on the run from a killing and the man who takes her in. There’s not a great deal of action here, but Dewey was an expert at writing a man of quiet, dependable strength, in the vein of Mac, and it is his narration that leads you along as he discovers the truth about the girl who has shown up at his beachfront cottage. Both are damaged characters who learn to depend upon each other, which is tested when the law starts closing in.
