Georges Simenon – Maigret and the Tavern by the Seine

Maigret and the Tavern by the Seine

Vintage Golden Age Mystery

TBR #22

Maigret hears the story of a six-year-old murder from a condemned blackmailer and sets about to investigate it, despite Madame Maigret urging him to join her on vacation in Alsace. Somewhat stumbling upon the site of the body’s disposal along the Seine and a small tavern visited by a number of Parisians on vacation, Maigret is on hand for another murder. How do the two murders tie together and how do all these individuals relate? As always, Maigret is a bit removed from the people he is observing and investigating, unable to quite fit in with the gaiety of life, like an adult among children. There is an existential weariness to Maigret that is enjoyable to visit, though I wouldn’t want to live there.
