Read 2 times. Last read February 6, 2016 to February 9, 2016.

Feb 2016: I listened to the audio this time and the ending still brought me to tears.

November 2013: My favorite Maisie tale so far. She is asked by her former employer's son, James Compton, to look into some petty crime and minor fires on an estate he is interested in buying. The case seems straightforward and simple, but evolves into a complex web of old secrets. She slowly uncovers the solution piece by piece in the Kent countryside as her assistant, Billy Beale, works on the estate during hop-picking season. I liked the way the story slowly grew and the final confrontation left me in tears with the pathos and sorrow of it.
