Leslie Charteris – The Saint and Mr. Teal (1933)

Vintage Golden Age Mystery
Scavenger Hunt Category: A Red Object
Date Finished: January 18, 2016

Three novellas featuring the Saint, all with a bit more panache and questionable ethics than the shorter stories of the 1950s and the tv adaptions of the 1960s. Mr. Teal is involved heavily in the first two but hardly at all in the third. The third is the best though. In the first the Saint fights a mastermind who controls a synthetic process for making gold, in the second he fights a mastermind who has imported American gangster tactics and formed a gang in poor old England, and in the third has gone to Scilly and punishes some drug ring masterminds. The third has a bit more Saint cleverness. All have criticisms of British laws, especially public morality laws. Ok, but not up to the standards Charteris set.

The red object is the Saint’s halo, by the way.
