the artful hallway
Sometimes I wonder why I haven’t gotten around to completing the most obvious of home projects. Like hanging things on the wall in our front hallway. We’ve lived here for about a year and a half now. These empty walls just don’t make sense.
The ceilings are very tall and the expansiveness of the hallway makes the space too nice to be ignored. This is what the hallway looked like when I left for work Friday morning.
Friday night after work I decided the walls had been empty long enough. However, I only addressed one side – the one without that crazy art niche that just baffles me.
There were about a half dozen pieces that needed to be relocated after the recent dining room changeup. Plus at least a half dozen more pieces just stashed away in closets. So much nicer now. Looks like people live here 🙂
I didn’t try to apply any logic to this task. This is a collection of original works and reproductions. Even a couple of antique prints. A completely heterogeneous mixture. To me, the visual interest of art is in the contrast more than the similarities. Just my opinion.
I had a couple of tiny sparks of inspiration during the process. While working on the three pieces closest to the front door, I was reluctant to suspend the oversized key in the middle from a nail. But I don’t happen to have a decorative hook.
So, I popped a piece from the middle of a surplus drawer knob over the end of a regular nail. A nice button glued to the end of the nail would have worked just as well.
I only worked on one side of the hallway. The other side of the hallway is waiting for a collage that I’ve not yet begun. It’s on the list.
Still waiting for an inspired idea for a rug or runner that can stand up to dogs. Especially the small accidents that sometimes occur near the front door when visitors arrive (if you know what I mean).
Other related projects for artful home decor include the Egypt-batik panels and the bead abacus.

I finally figured out the perfect word for how I would describe your lovely home…..BREATHE.
Whenever you share photos of your casa I always feel like can breathe because it’s so airy and open. And I just LOVE that. Clutter makes me feel claustrophobic. It’s the same with blogs that I visit that are overkilled with design. I feel like I can’t breathe when I’m reading a post. Less to me is more.

I think contrast is so much more interesting than having art all similar. Love what you did with the nail that hangs the key – ingenious!

I had the same challenge when I tried to find a decorative hook. I was trying to hang a mirror that was suspended by a ribbon. Eventually, I used a small crystal cabinet knob. If you find a source for decorative knobs, please, please share. Your taste and style are impeccable, so I know if you find some, they’ll be great.

P.S. I did see some gorgeous decorative hools in the art.com print catalog. They looked like little crowns. When I contacted them, they said they just sold the decor items; not the hooks. Darn!
