Treasure Chest

We found an awesome old trunk for $30 at a garage sale on Saturday that I was so excited to makeover. It was awesome because of its size {I could fit in this thing!} and shape, not so much the paint color. See?
Someone at some time had tried to paint it and chose this not-so-lovely shade of green. I’m not usually a gold person, but I wanted to bring it back to an old world feel so I went with a two-toned color scheme of Rustoleum’s Heirloom White and Metallic Gold. Here’s how it turned out:
The paint colors still give it an aged look but it’s more fresh and clean. I will fully admit that painting this thing was not easy. I had to tape off all the metal parts to paint the white and then tape off all the white parts to paint the gold. The tricky part was that it wasn’t just taping off straight lines. It was taping off all these weird-shaped pieces that took so long.
But it was worth every minute because I absolutely love it. It kind of reminds me of an old sunken pirate chest pulled out of the water that’s been shined back to life.
I got the rope for the handles at Home Depot for $0.67/foot and bought three feet. We took out the old leather handles {which were in pretty sad shape} and Mike drilled holes in the side to fit the rope through.
And it looks great in its new home in the loft.

Thanks, Coley! The man who we bought it from actually said they used it as a coffee table because it’s so big. Good luck with your search!
I love it! And those rope handles are the perfect finishing touch.
Thanks. I think the rope handles are my favorite part:)
This was a beautiful find and the makeover is just ingenius.

Wow, I bet that is a really unique suitcase! I love old stuff:)
Great Job! I have a few ugly trunks can’t wait to try this.
Thanks! Love the look of your store:)
OMG! I have one just like that! I picked it up at a thrift shop back in the 70s! I was just recently considering making it into a toy box, but there is a layer of some kind of cloth…did you have this? Did you paint over it? Yours looks stunning!
No cloth on mine. There were some areas where the wood was chipping so I just sanded it down and smoothed it out before I painted it. Sorry, I’m not much help but good luck if you attempt it! I’m sure it would make a great toy box!
Turned out great! I recently painted a trunk as well and I can’t part with it now. I’d love to have you share this at my party this weekend http://designergarden.blogspot.com/p/where-i-link-up.html
Thanks, Sommer! I will definitely link up!
Oh, I LUV LOVE LURVE it! I’ve never seen one made of wood for such an awesome price! Lucky you! It’s beautiful!
NO WAY!!! I have my mom’s old metal blue trunk and I was just thinking about it (like an hour ago!!!) and how I could make it look better. Now I’m totally inspired!!! Thank you soooo much!!! We use it as our dress-up trunk.

[...] Today I’m going to share how I made a few accessories for the kitchen. I would still like to find some cool, industrial, vintage signs to hang in there at some point but for now I we’ll focus on a few small additions to the kitchen. I spent $6 on two teacups, a saucer, a coffee jar, and a pitcher. If you didn’t already know, Goodwill has 50% off the whole store the first Saturday of each month-great time to stock up on random junk. I started by spraying it all with Rustoleum’s Heirloom White {leftover from the trunk}. [...]
