Hangman's Root (China Bayles, #3)

I like China Bayles, her town, her herbs, and her boyfriend. Also her mysteries. This one was a little heavy-handed with the animal rights stuff but I overlooked it in favor of her wit and strong personality. I like that the local is fictional but proclaimed to be set in the Texas Hill Country and it feels true and grounded there. The tidbits about herblore are fun as she left her high-powered lawyer life to open an herb shop. Fun story here about a professor who is killed and China's friend who picks up stray cats is accused.
