To paint or not to paint...that is the question!

Should you paint your kitchen cabinets? I have seen that question posed to Blogland on behalf of people who are trying to make that decision. So, having my grandies with me and being short on time to do a project, I decided to answer that question, as well as post a few bargains.

First, Hobby Lobby has things marked down 80% right now, and I loved this sign for "Groceries". I decided to hang it inside my pantry!

And now the the paint question....having lived with stained cabinets for 35 years, I decided that I needed to paint my kitchen. We are big do-it-yourself people, but we hired this out to someone who does this as a business. We chose a creamy white with a glaze for the country French look.
We had this done 5 years ago, and as you can see, the cabinets still look beautiful.

We didn't go with new cabinets....just had these painted and had the soffett removed above the sink.

The island is painted black with the edges burned back.

A flea market bird cage sits on top of the fridge.

Our walls are painted "stonehouse" by Benjamin Moore.

Another thrifty GW topiary and basket.

I couldn't resist this Hobby Lobby sign "Bon Appétit"....just wish they had put the accent on it!

Our countertops are Sahara Blue by Silestone. They have held up beautifully and are non-porous.

That's it for the kitchen tour. I've got to get baths for little ones. But, let me say, while I love stained cabinets, I am really thrilled for a change after all those years. I'd paint (or have them painted) again in a heartbeat!
I'm joining these parties:

Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for Met Monday
Rhoda at Southern Hospitality for Today's Thrifty Treasure
Marty at A Stroll Thru Life for Tabletop Tuesday
Linda at Coastal Charm for Nifty Thrifty Tuesday
Hope you are enjoying your kitchen. Bon appétit! Blessings to you! Linda

Oh I would have mine painted in a NY second too if hubby wouldn't die of a heart attack. I love your cabinets and your kitchen. Just stunning. Your new thrifty finds are awesome too. Such a beautiful place to work. Hugs, Marty

I had walnut cupboard doors in my kitchen for almost 20 years and always thought it was a little dark. So when we decided to re-do our benches, I also painted the cuboards and it made such a difference. So Linda, I am with you on this one, I too would do it again in a heartbeat.

Hi Linda,
This is a question I've been debating in my head. Like Marty's hubby, mine is not real thrilled with my idea of painting over oak cabinets. Your's are just gorgeous! And I would love the change and I just have to gradually work on him some more!
lol! I love how beautiful your kitchen is and all your cute decorating finds too!

Linda, we had ours painted about the same time you did and love ours too. I would do it again in a hearbeat, too. My black ones are showing some wear especially the door to the trash can. I may have to redo that myself. I love your kitchen and what cute signs from hob lob.

Love the touched of red in your kitchen, too!

Lovely kitchen! I agree totally. I painted our boring brown wood kitchen in a pale cream when we moved here, and although it is looking a bit shabby chic right now and in need of a fresh coat of paint sometime, it still looks lovely compared to what it did before. Lighter and fresher. The company who did yours did a lovely job!

Linda, love your kitchen, it has just the right frenchy touches. My counter tops are very similar to yours, silestone too. My cabinets are white and I would like to glaze them too, but they aren't real wood, I think they are a laminate, albeit a good looking laminate, not sure they would accept the glaze. Thanks for sharing you kitchen. Marla

Hi Linda! I love your kitchen and love your painted cabinets. I live in an older home and the cabinets were painted when we moved in. I've painted them a couple of times since. They're not perfect but I like to say they have character. Now your cabinets look perfect, my dear! :)

Linda, this is a wonderful kitchen redo! It's just stunning! I am so tempted seeing this to paint our cabinets. Yes, I am! You and my friend Lou Cinda are giving me the courage to take the plunge! And I love your countertop, too. It's beautiful. Great color there and on the walls. Just a super kitchen!

I'm all for painted cupboards. We are in the middle of a new reno and my cupboards (new) are just being sprayed this week. We went with a bright green for the island and like my husband said "it's only paint" if we ever decide to change the colour.

p.s....I bet you could paint a little accent on the Bon Appetit sign!

Sweet Bee Cottage said...

OH yes I agree, the painted cabinets were a good move. I think you can fix your sign, just take it to Hobby Lobby find one of those cheap acrylic paints that match it and you could stencil it or free hand it. I had to do something similar when an apostrophe was on a sign and shouldn't be have been there. I just matched the background and painted over it. You only notice if you're really up close.

Mine are painted a dark blue and naturally distressed! So many people walk in my house and that's the first thing they say, "Oh, I love your cabinets!" Your kitchen looks just beautiful, love what you've done.

Your kitchen looks lovely! My cabs are less than 10 y o so I am not tired of them yet! We did change the counters to granite and have the cabs trimmed out and a new tile back splash. That will be it for ever I think! :)

Hello Linda!
Just found your blog this morning!
I think your kitchen looks wonderful. My favorites are the little topiary accents. I love how they always look perfect anywhere you put them.
I took 3 years of French in high school and what remember most are the first few lines of The Three Bears! Dans une grande foret, dans une petite cabin habit la famille.....My teacher believed in "teaching yourself" and grading yourself. I felt like I learned nothing. Such a shame because I realized it then and mentioned it to him on more than one occassion.
So glad I found you today!
