March 2015: raising my review to 4 stars after listening again. This is a great series.
April 2013: 3.5 stars. This is the beginning of a trilogy and there was a lot of groundwork to lay down so I felt that it started a little slow. However, once the story got going I felt that it had promise and became interesting. Cinder is a cyborg in a society that disdains them and thus she is an outcast. She has a mean stepmother, two stepsisters, and becomes acquainted with the prince when he's incognito at the market where she has a booth as a mechanic. But there's political intrigue as the evil Lunar Queen wants to marry the prince, make war on Earth, and control everyone with her brainwashing power. There's a mysterious plague that's killing Earthens and Cinder is right in the middle, as well as trying to attend a ball and dance with the prince. It's a clever re-telling and the last third really got the story rolling, so that by the end I was invested and ready for the sequel.
