Step-by-Step: How to Make Peppermint Body Butter
Follow these simple step-by-step instructions to learn how to make peppermint body butter.
Step 1: Melt Shea Butter and Coconut Oil
Add ½ cup of coconut oil and ½ cup of shea butter to a double boiler and heat on low until melted, stirring frequently. Stir to combine, then remove the double boiler from the heat and let it sit until the ingredients are cooled to room temperature.
Step 2: Chill the Butter-Oil Mixture
Transfer the mixture into a bowl and set in the fridge for 15-20 minutes. It’s easiest to whip ingredients that are fully cooled.
Step 3: Add Colorant and Essential Oil
Remove from the fridge and add the pink food coloring until you get the color you desire. Then add 5-10 drops of peppermint essential oil and stir to combine.
Step 4: Whip Body Butter Ingredients
Use a hand mixer to beat the ingredients int the bowl until they’re whipped (it should take about 2-3 minutes).
Step 5: Transfer Body Butter to Jar
Scoop the body butter into an airtight container, such as a mason jar, and seal. Keep the body butter at room temperature for about 6 months. If you see any separation, simply stir well.

How to use it
Body butter works best when applied to freshly cleaned skin (right after a shower or bath is perfect!). Apply a small amount of the cream to your to skin and rub until absorbed. A little goes a long way so don’t go overboard.
What’s the purpose of whipping the body butter?
When you whip it rather than leave it in a more solid state, it’s much easier to apply and absorb into skin. It’s lighter and I find it helps keep skin from feeling greasy after application.
What’s the difference between a lotion and body butter?
Lotions have water-based ingredients in them like purified water or aloe (so they are more likely to need natural preservatives added to them).
On the other hand, body butter doesn’t contain any water-based ingredients, so they leaves your skin feeling much silkier and more hydrated. And they are more shelf-stable.
Tip: Exfoliate skin first
When dealing with dry skin, it’s so important to exfoliate before you moisturize if you want your skin to absorb the lotion or butter.

Shea butter substitutes
I like working with shea butter because it has wonderful moisturizing properties for dry skin. If you don’t have shea butter, you can substitute another moisturizing butter like cocoa butter or kokum butter. Read my post on different carrier oils and butters to read more about other options.
Coconut oil substitutes
I get so many emails asking what oil to substitute for the coconut oil I use in various beauty tutorials because of an allergy. You can substitute other oils like jojoba or sweet almond in most DIY beauty recipes that use beeswax (without much change to the texture).
