Now on to this DIY:
This is one of 4 DIY sewing projects of making a large shirt into a little girls dress! Check out the other posts, one(this won a Refashion Runway contest!), two, three!
Before
I bought this men’s shirt at Target clearance section for $10 in size XL. I loved the sailor boat pattern and also the fabric, the fabric is a thick, sturdy, high quality fabric which I liked. I’ve had this project in my mind for a few months and wanted to do a turn a XL shirt into a girl’s dress part two(see part one here) so when I saw this shirt I immediately thought of turning it into a girl’s dress.
Instructions:
1. Lay the shirt down on a flat surface.
2. Using a girl’s dress as a reference, cut the sleeves off and the top body piece, and take out the pocket. Cut and discard the extra fabric in between the shoulder area.
3. Sew the sides of the top piece together(shown in pink line). Make sure you turned it inside out first(sorry it’s not pictured).
4. After cutting off the excess fabric on the shoulder area, you should now have a straight across skirt piece. Baste stitch 1/2″ to the edge(shown in pink line) and pulling one side of the string, gather it together. Sew the skirt onto the top piece.
5. Cut the sleeves smaller.
6. Sew along the pink line.
7. Sew the sleeves onto the top piece.
8. *I made a button hole and sewed the button on right below the waistline.
9. Serge the unfinished seams.
After
What you’ll need:
-An oversized shirt(mine from Target)
-matching thread
-needle or sewing machine
-scissors
Directions:
Make sure you turned it inside out first.
8. *I made a button hole and sewed the button on right below the waistline(when I cut the shirt diagonally along the waistline, I had to cut right over the button & the button hole so I had to make new ones).
Estimated time: 1.5 hours
Budget: cost of the shirt(mine was $10)
Skill level: a very confident beginner to intermediate
and to show you what I have to deal with while trying to take pictures…
My husband does this every time I really don’t want him in the pictures. Sigh. Why can’t he be so eager to be in pictures when I actually want him to be in pictures???

Wow, what an awesome diy! I have a question though, when you cut the shirt, what happens when you cut perpendicular to a seam? Like when you cut the shirt in half, won't all the stitching along the buttons unravel? Or when you cut the sleeves so they are smaller, won't the hem of the sleeve come undone since you've cut right into the seam? I wonder if I'm asking my question clear enough? Thanks!
Hanna says
This looks awsome! I'd love this for myself actually. I wonder what size I should buy to make myself one. XXXXXXXXL, perhaps? Sigh… But, your girl looks so pretty! Thanks for sharing!

I think I got what you were saying. I didn't add that I serged the frayed seams so I added that on the instructions! It frayed a tiny but while sewing but not enough to cause any problems, and then when I finished it with serging, it fixed the problem. I hope I answered your question?
Sarah says
Haha, yeah possibly a size that they don't offer? But you can make it into a shirt for you with the same waist design which will be like a peplum? I think that'd be really cute, I actually wished I had done that with this shirt! 🙂
Anonymous says
Thanks I think I get it? When you serge then it kind of locks down the cut seam?
SheilaJ says
Very nice! When you attached the new sleeves, what did you do to make them puff up at the top?

Much of the pain of sewing isn’t the seams, but the finishing things – button holes, buttons, hems, collars, etc. I am wondering if it would work for pioneer dresses, or even a skirt …. I have always wanted to try taking an over sized swimming suit and cutting it down just to get the fabric. Dumb question – do women’s shirts normally button on the opposite side of men’s shirts?
i have wondered before – the crazy way my mind works sometimes smile – and heavier girls please don’t be offended – if you could take a larger sized item – such as blouse or dress or skirt – or even swimming suit – that is on sale and cut it down to make a smaller item. It is so hard to find in the fabric store fabrics that are appropriate for many – most fashionable clothes – esp. swimming suits.

Hello! This is such a cute dress! I have a question about the buttons, though. Once you sew the skirt back to the bodice, the placket is serged, which, of course, would keep it from being usable as intended. Does not being able to unbutton it at the waist make it hard to put on at all? It seems it would be hard to get that part over the shoulders or hips.
Gen says
Haha I have to laugh! My husband would do the same thing when taking pictures! It kids pretty cute hubby poking your son around the side of the bricks! Great refashion btw! Love it. Hope my attempt looks as good as yours. I have a “wing it” sewing style, doesn’t always work though!
